There’s no doubt that the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had a faculty that was full of drama, talent, and glory. Some of the most celebrated wizards have found a place at the high table at the Great Hall, and some of the most nefarious ones. But one thing’s for sure, the staff room at Hogwarts never had a dull moment.
But who was the most heroic professor of all? There were so many brave, selfless heroes who gave their life away in the Battle of Hogwarts, be it Remus Lupin who left behind a child, or Severus Snape who literally dedicated his life to protecting the child of his one true love. Then there was the bad batch who did some significant damage to the student’s future. Here’s the definitive ranking of Hogwarts professors from the most heroic to most notorious
10 Minerva McGonagall
The most heroic spot may be hotly contested by Professor Snape who literally gave his life away for the cause and to protect Harry. But if one looks at the broader picture, it takes a lot of courage to stand by your convictions in the face of a threat as intimidating as the Dark Lord and to fight from the front lines instead of playing a double agent. Unlike Snape, Professor McGonagall had the bravado to stand by the school and her students and to lead a clearly under-equipped army against the horde of Death Eaters in a battle they had almost no chance of winning. Sure, Snape had his reasons for working with Voldemort, but McGonagall was the pillar of strength for her students at the time when they needed her the most.
9 Professor Lupin
There was an astounding selflessness about Professor Lupin that was quite unmatched; it was no surprise that he died while fighting the good fight and was somehow a fitting ending to his extraordinary trajectory. Over the years he had made many sacrifices, some personal and some professional, but protecting Harry and his students was always of the utmost importance to him.
In fact, JK Rowling killed off Lupin to make a point about the atrocities of any war. “I think one of the most devastating things about war is the children left behind. As happened in the first war when Harry’s left behind, I wanted us to see another child left behind. And it made it very poignant that it was their newborn son,” she had once said.
8 Severus Snape
When one thinks about the relentless and quiet sacrifices Snape had made over the course of his life, it’s easier to get a better perspective on his character. Snape was also a fighter, but he just went about it in a different way. He understood that by gaining entry to Voldemort’s inner circle, he would probably be able to protect many more people, and to some extent he did. There’s no doubt that Snape was extraordinarily heroic, and Harry’s safety was his first priority, always. But he was also deeply committed to seeing a better future for the wizarding world, and not to mention in the course of the series he has had to make the most brutal sacrifices, from killing Dumbledore to giving his own life.
7 Rubeus Hagrid
Hagrid may not be the best professor around but fans are completely ready to overlook his somewhat lacking student management skills in his Care of Magical Creatures class. Hagrid’s whole life was about Hogwarts and its students; interestingly, in spite of his personal attachment to Harry, he did not participate in favoritism.
Each and every child in the school was equally precious to him, and this was also the reason he was considered to be so much more than just the groundskeeper. He had also been closely associated with Hogwarts for many, many years and that would explain his undying loyalty towards Dumbledore and its people.
6 Mad-Eye Moody
Professor Moody is the no-nonsense teacher that any sparring wizarding world needs. Moody had often been described as the most unsentimental professor, but that’s quite harsh. He was simply in sync with the world he inhabited and was one of the most functional assets in the war against Voldemort and designed most of the escape plans for Harry to keep him safe. It’s possible that after his friend Dumbledore’s death he felt oddly responsible for Harry’s safety because he was acutely aware of his history and how crucial he was in the fight against the Dark Lord.
5 Pomona Sprout
Professor Sprout’s accomplishments are often overlooked when it comes to evaluating the sacrifices made by the faculty. But the herbology professor has always steadfastly protested any kind of fascism at Hogwarts. Anyone who has read the books is aware that Sprout openly retaliated against Dolores Umbridge’s policies and even assisted in the ousting of Snape.
She was instrumental in the battle of Hogwarts and used her herbology skills to cause distress to several Death Eaters. Not to mention, she survived the battle and even returned to teach at Hogwarts.
4 Horace Slughorn
The reason Professor Slughorn isn’t on the extreme ends of this list is that he is one of the most humane and comfort-seeking professors in Hogwarts. He never performed a crime per se, his only crime was not being audacious enough to handle the brutal world that he lived in. He was the first person to tell Tom Riddle about how Horcruxes work, if he didn’t do it, Riddle had plenty of other sources to learn about Dark Magic so he can’t really be blamed for being chatty or for practicing a bit of harmless favoritism. Not to mention, after years of evading the Death Eaters he finally comes out of the shadow to defend Hogwarts alongside the other professors.
3 Gilderoy Lockhart
To call Lockhart villainous would be a huge stretch but his phoniness was definitely quite criminal. He had lied and manipulated people with charms to establish himself as an acclaimed wizard who has supposedly encountered fierce monsters. But in reality, all of his accomplishments are fake.
He was a celebrity and he only sought fame and glory like many others, but his biggest fault was to actually accept a position that’s so risky and could actually endanger the lives of his students. Though he never really had the brains to become a criminal mastermind, his ignorance and deception were very punishable.
2 Dolores Umbridge
Umbridge really tried to do away with every good thing about the wizarding world; she endorsed a theory-based, formulaic approach to education, she enjoyed putting students in difficult positions, she was a power-hungry authoritarian who endorsed fascism, and was definitely quite abusive and sadistic. Not to mention she was intolerant and shared Death-Eaters’ vision of a pure-blood supremacy. She was the mind behind the Muggle-Born Registration Commission and sought a holocaust to usher in a singular heritage. After the Second Wizarding War, she was sentenced to Azkaban for her crimes against Muggle-borns.
1 Quirinus Quirrell
Quirrell was a faithful servant to Voldemort, and fans have often debated over why Quirrell so desperately wanted to please him. Was it for recognition? Or glory? Or did he seek some sort of revenge on his naysayers? But it’s clear that he simply wanted to be taken seriously and he sought out Voldemort. The Dark Lord took over his body and basically made him a vessel to carry out his evil deeds after the professor returned from his sabbatical in Albania. But he, no doubt found Harry at the most vulnerable period of the latter’s life when he was just a first-year student and had no idea about the deadly legacy of Voldemort, or even the full knowledge of his own connection with the Dark Lord. The damage Quirrell could have caused Harry back then is terrifying.
