Based on the descriptions in the Harry Potter books, what are the Death Eaters (and Voldemort) really supposed to look like?

Harry Potter How Each Death Eater Is Supposed To Look

Aside from Lucius Malfoy fans generally saw Death Eaters in the Harry Potter series behind their Death Eater masks. But, in the Harry Potter books, there was a bit more room to describe and differentiate between Lord Voldemort’s evil henchmen (and women).

They weren’t faceless fiends, but rather individuals who “made all the wrong choices”. Along with Lucius himself, we will get a glimpse of how each Death Eater was meant to look, behind each individual mask, and whether the actors cast to portray them came close to filling that original vision.

10 Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy, father to Draco Malfoy, husband to Narcissa Malfoy, and Death Eater who (originally) walked free of punishment. Lucius on the page does look quite a bit like actor Jason Isaacs (especially when he dons his Paris Hilton blond wig). Lucius is described as pale, with a pointed face, pale blond hair, and cold grey eyes. (See lumione’s interpretation above)

9 Bellatrix Lestrange

Actress Helena Bonham Carter certainly embraces all of Bellatrix’s insanity and enthusiasm, but she doesn’t mirror the description Rowling gives Voldemort’s top lieutenant in the books. Bellatrix is described as very beautiful with long, thick, shining, black hair (not quite the tangled wig that Bonham Carter wears). She is also supposed to have thin lips, dark, heady lidded eyes, and a strong jaw. (See her drawn by Aïcha above).

8 Peter Pettigrew

The fallen Gryffindor is played by Timothy Spall in the Harry Potter films and, while Spall embraces Pettigrew’s rat-like mannerisms in his acting, the look isn’t quite there (though they can be seen in Lancviv’s art). In the books, Pettigrew had grubby skin, small watery eyes, and a pointed nose, with mousy brown hair. Spall’s hair is a bit more brown than red, and his nose lacks the pointiness of a mouse or rat.

7 Barty Crouch Jr.

Barty Crouch Jr., played by David Tennant in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is described in the books as pale, with slightly freckled skin. He is supposed to have a “mop of fair hair,” along with lined face, looking old due to the time he spent in Azkaban. (A young fair-haired Barty can be seen in Zara’s art).

Tennant obviously had dark hair in the film, lacked freckles, and didn’t look nearly as old as his character is described on the page.

6 Fenrir Greyback

Fenrir Greyback, the infamous werewolf (who happened to have attacked Remus Lupin as a boy) took on some of his more wolflike tendencies while in his human form. He is described as a large man (tall like actor, Dave Legeno) who is particularly vicious looking. He is supposed to have matted gray hair and whiskers, along with pointed teeth and long yellowish nails. The makeup department certainly did their job. See a different look from Meg, above.

5 Voldemort

Speaking of the makeup department, they also did quite the job on Ralph Fiennes when preparing him for his role as Lord Voldemort himself. He has the slit-like snake nostrils of the books along with the long fingers and incredibly pale skin. What he lacks, however, are Voldemort’s red eyes that also boast cat slit style pupils. Kazer_Renato drawing, above, does not lack anything.

4 Draco Malfoy

Draco, like his father, has sleek white-blond hair, cold gray eyes, sharp, pointed features, and a pale complexion. Like Jason Isaacs, Tom Felton was cast just right. Felton did have to bleach his hair to get the look completely right, but the rest was all already there (along with his bullying attitude and sneer).

3 Severus Snape

It’s hard to find a better casting decision than picking Alan Rickman to play potions master Severus Snape. He certainly had the sallow skin and black wig to do it. Add that to Rickman’s diction and cold stare and it’s hard to find any faults.

However, in the books, Snape, like his contemporaries Sirius and Lupin, is quite a bit younger than the actor cast to play him. In the books, Snape is only thirty-one when they begin. (Drawn by Marina Michkina above).

2 Igor Karkaroff

Karkaroff, headmaster of Durmstang Academy, was described as tall and thin, a bit like Albus Dumbledore. What he lacked was Dumbledore’s cheerful demeanor, as Karkaroff’s smile never seemed to reach his eyes, which were blue. He was said to have a weak chin and a goatee, that ended in a small curl. His teeth were yellow. Aside from the blue eyes actor, Predrag Bjelac fit the description relatively well. See Karkaroff with a few other Death Eaters in Zerochan’s art.

1 Antonin Dolohov

Dolohov may seem like the least well known Death Eater on this list, but he played quite the role in the last Harry Potter book. For those who didn’t know, it was Antonin Dolohov who killed Remus Lupin at the battle of Hogwarts. In the film, he is one of the Death Eaters stunned by Harry, Ron, and Hermione at the coffee shop. He is described in the books as being “burly,” as well as having a long, pale and twisted face. He is large and has dark hair. Actor Arben Bajraktaraj fit the description well. See lady-voldything’s look above as well.
