Harry Potter How Hogwarts & Its Professors Are Funded

Hogwarts was presented as one of the premier schools within the Wizarding World, but the Harry Potter franchise didn’t make an effort to explain how the school and its professors were funded. Serving as the anchor setting for much of the series, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was a backdrop for every installment in the tale documenting Harry Potter’s journey in defeating Lord Voldemort. It wasn’t until author J.K. Rowling took to social media did the fanbase learn the inner workings of Hogwarts’ financial status.

Hogwarts was built in the 10th century, making it one of the oldest educational institutions for magical children. Founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, the school was located in the Scottish Highlands, but to the outside world, it appeared as an old, decrepit castle. Wizards and witches from Great Britain and Ireland began attending Hogwarts at the age of 11, spending the better part of seven years learning the various branches of magic. In order to do so, the Headmaster was tasked with hiring a litany of experts in different fields of wizardry. To keep the school running smoothly, other support staff were needed, such as the kitchen crew consisting of house-elves and Rubeus Hagrid, the groundskeeper.

Though the movie adaptations of Rowling’s epic fantasy story ended a decade ago, the discussion regarding tuition for the prestigious institute remains. Many often wonder how families afforded to send their children to a school like Hogwarts for seven years, especially those like the Weasley family, who had to support seven magical children. Rowling actually shed light on the topic in 2015 (via Twitter), revealing tuition was free for students since it was all funded by the Ministry of Magic. With that revelation, it spawned a new question: how did the Ministry obtain money to fund a school like Hogwarts?

Seeing as Hogwarts was one of a small handful of magical schools in the world, there weren’t any other options for students in the Wizarding World. It would be detrimental to the magical community to force families to pay for imperative education and training. Essentially, Hogwarts acted as a public school funded by the government, or in this case, the governing body for the magical community. Despite not being confirmed, it was likely the Ministry collected taxes similar to the real world in order to allocate money to Hogwarts, who in turn paid their staff adequate salaries while keeping the school up and running. Granted, the exact number of those salaries is still unknown, but the staff was likely paid in Galleons, the primary currency for the wizard community.

Hogwarts, of course, took the educational experience a bit farther than most ordinary public schools by providing a place to live for much of the school year. In addition, they provided meals and other essentials. Granted, students were required to provide some of their own supplies such as wands, robes, broomsticks, and textbooks. Even though Hogwarts students had it better than most, Harry Potter proved the Ministry didn’t have the funds to cover all costs.
