In the wizarding world of Harry Potter, a wand is one of the most powerful and useful magical objects in existence. Wands enable witches and wizards to focus their magical power, and the connection between wand and wizard is astonishing.

However, not every witch or wizard seems to have a wand that suits them. Each wand wood and core has particular mystical properties, and if the wand truly does choose the wizard, it would seem that some wands have chosen more wisely than others. Here’s 10 witches and wizards who don’t seem to match their wands.

10 Draco Malfoy

Draco’s wand is a bit of a conundrum in itself. His unicorn hair core would indicate his hidden innocence, but his hawthorn wood is a unique aspect of his wand.

Hawthorn is supposed to be a very contradictory wood, which does match Malfoy’s temperament, but it is also a wood that symbolizes love, protection, and balance, which seems to be pretty contrary to Malfoy’s typical behavior.

9 Fleur Delacour

Fleur Delacour has a pretty unusual wand. Her wand wood is rosewood, and the core of her wand is a veela hair that came from Fleur’s grandmother.

Rosewood is a symbol of love and beauty so that seems appropriate, however a veela hair core is a very temperamental and unreliable magic source. Fleur’s personal connection to it probably helps, but a witch as powerful as her seems ill-suited to an unpredictable wand core.

8 Sybil Trelawney

Professor Trelawney’s wand was a wand made of hazel and unicorn hair, and it’s quite surprising that she of all people would end up with a hazel wood wand.

Hazel is a wood that is very sensitive to it’s owners emotions, so it’s the most reliable in the hands of a witch or wizard who can easily manage and control their emotions, which doesn’t seem to be Trelawney’s strong suit.

7 Ginny Weasley

It’s unknown what kind of core Ginny Weasley had in her own wand, but her wand wood was yew.

The only other well known yew-wielder in the story was Voldemort himself, and that seems appropriate because yew wands supposedly gave the user some kind of power over life and death. That is something that makes sense for Voldemort, but seems completely out of place for someone like Ginny.

6 Horace Slughorn

Horace Slughorn wields a cedar wood wand with a dragon heartstring core. Dragon heartstring is a reliably strong core that seems to be drawn to the more morally ambiguous witch or wizard, so that makes sense.

But according to wand expert Garrick Ollivander, people with cedar wands tend to be exceptionally hard to fool, are very loyal, and have strong character, which seems to be completely contradictory to Slughorn’s personality.

5 Gilderoy Lockhart

Maybe Gilderoy Lockhart’s mismatched wand explains why it eventually backfired on him, because his cherry and dragon heartstring wand seems to be ideally suited to someone who is the polar opposite to him.

Dragon heartstring is the wand core that produces the most power, and cherry wood is a wood that isn’t recommended for any witch or wizard who doesn’t have extraordinary personal control and strength of mind, both of which Lockhart is truly lacking.

4 Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Umbridge works with a wand core of dragon heartstring, which seems to make sense more than any other core at least. However, her wand wood is made of birch, which is a wood with a lot of positive meaning and connotation.

Birch symbolizes rebirth and regeneration, and is thought to be a wood of hope, which feels completely contrary to Dolores Umbridge’s vibe.

3 Ron Weasley

Everyone knows that the world of the Weasley family is the world of hand-me-downs, so it comes as no surprise that the second youngest member of the Weasley family had to use a pre-owned wand.

Ron’s first wand was his brother Charlie’s old wand, and it was ash and unicorn hair. Ash wood is notorious for being loyal to it’s true master, and that is exceptionally true if it’s core is unicorn hair, so Ron spent his early magical career using a barely usable wand.

2 Bellatrix Lestrange

Not to impugn Bellatrix Lestrange’s intelligence, but her walnut and dragon heartstring wand seems to be ill-suited to her. Dragon heartstring might be the best wand core for the dark arts, however walnut is a wood that is ideal for extremely intelligent witches and wizards according to Harry Potter lore.

The Black family generally aren’t slouches when it comes to the brain power department, but Bellatrix barely seems to think most of the time, let alone be an extraordinarily intelligent witch.

1 Albus Dumbledore

Well, the most obvious way in which Dumbledore’s wand doesn’t suit him is that it’s not his wand. The Elder Wand may be one of the most powerful wands in existence, but a wand that isn’t made for the wizard is always going to be a tough match.

But aside from that, in the world of wandlore elder wood is supposed to be an enormously unlucky and difficult to handle wand wood. The same goes for it’s thestral tail hair core, it’s an unpredictable core that is difficult to work with.
