Harry Potter What Each Character Saw In The Mirror Of Erised (& Why)

The Harry Potter novels and movies introduced a number of magical objects that might seem harmless but actually hold a lot of power, and thus can affect each person differently. Among those is the Mirror of Erised, one of the most fascinating objects in the Wizarding World and which showed different things to those who saw their reflection in it, and here’s what the main characters in the saga saw in it. Readers were introduced to the Wizarding World in 1997 in J.K. Rowling’s debut novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which would become the first entry in a successful series of seven novels.

The Harry Potter books tell the story of “the boy who lived” and Lord Voldemort, the darkest wizard of all who had sinister plans for both the muggle and wizarding worlds and a personal vendetta against Harry as the young wizard was the only survivor of his attacks. The Harry Potter series became a worldwide phenomenon, so it wasn’t surprising that it made the jump to the big screen between 2001 and 2011 (with the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, divided into two movies). The movies were very well-received by critics, fans, and casual viewers, and it allowed fans of the books to see more clearly some moments, objects, and more, though many others got lost in the jump from the pages to the big screen.

Bringing a magical world like that of Harry Potter to the big screen was no easy task, as the magical places, objects, and more had to be believable, and the crew behind the movies truly achieved this. One of the most memorable objects introduced in the Harry Potter series was the Mirror of Erised, a magical mirror that shows “the deepest, most desperate desire” of the hearts of those who see their reflection in it, but one person can’t see those of others even if they are looking at the same time. This has caused some wizards to go mad as they would obsess over what they saw in the mirror, and what a person sees in it can change with time. The main characters in the Harry Potter saga saw their reflection in it at least once, and here’s what each of them saw in the mythical Mirror of Erised.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter What Each Character Saw In The Mirror Of Erised (& Why)

The boy who lived saw his reflection in the Mirror of Erised on three different occasions. First, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he saw his parents (and extended family as well, though in the movies only Lily and James Potter showed up), which piqued his curiosity and led Dumbledore to explain to him (and the audience) what the mirror was all about. Later on in the story, he stood in front of the mirror again as commanded by Professor Quirrell and lied about what he saw: he told him he saw himself shaking hands with Dumbledore after winning the House Cup when in reality, he saw himself holding the Philosopher’s Stone as Dumbledore bewitched the Mirror to hold it, and could only be retrieved by that person who wanted to find it but not use it, as Harry did. The last time Harry saw himself in the Mirror of Erised was in 1997, and he saw Lord Voldemort defeated and dead, as this was during the peak of his return.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore saw himself in the mirror on two occasions (known to the audience, that is). In 1927, during the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Dumbledore saw himself with Gellert Grindelwald, his former friend and lover, who by then had already become a powerful and dangerous Dark Wizard (being second only to Voldemort, but at the time, he was at the top of the list). In 1991, during Harry’s first year at Hogwarts and following his discovery of the mirror, the young wizard asked what he saw and Dumbledore replied that “a pair of thick, white woolen socks”, under the explanation that a pair of socks would be a nice gift. However, what he truly saw was his whole family alive and happy: his parents Percival and Kendra, his brother Aberforth, and his sister Ariana, who he saw properly using magic. Dumbledore lied about this in order to dissuade Harry from seeking further use of the mirror and thus obsessing with it, and it worked.

Ron Weasley

Ron Weasley used the Mirror of Erised once and his deepest desire is perhaps one of the most harmless of all. Ron saw his reflection in it when Harry tried to show him his parents in the mirror before he knew how it actually worked. Ron was shocked to see himself as Quidditch Captain, Head Boy (a seventh-year student who had authority over Prefects and a role that his brothers Bill and Percy had), and standing apart from his brothers as he was better than all of them. Ron grew up with his parents and his six siblings, and with all of his older brothers excelling in different activities and tasks, he often felt left behind. His desire on the Mirror of Erised reflected just that, and what he wanted the most was to show that he could achieve greatness too, just like his siblings.

Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger didn’t see her reflection on the Mirror of Erised throughout the Harry Potter saga, but J.K. Rowling has shared what she would see if she did. According to her, and going back to 1997, Hermione would have seen Voldemort defeated and dead (just like Harry did), herself and her friends alive and well, and herself in a romantic embrace with Ron. Luckily for her, all those desires came true.

Lord Voldemort

Just like Hermione, it’s unknown if Lord Voldemort ever looked into the Mirror of Erised, but J.K. Rowling also explained what he would have seen had he seen his reflection in the magical mirror. Setting the situation in 1997, the year of the Battle of Hogwarts and the peak of his return, Voldemort would have seen himself as the most powerful wizard of all, an immortal one, and with Harry Potter nowhere to stop him. Of course, this didn’t happen, and he was defeated once all the Horcruxes were destroyed and Harry put an end to his reign of darkness.
