Harry Potter Why Wizards Dont Use Technology

Harry Potter’s Wizarding World is full of magical objects and animals, but wizards seem to be somewhat stuck in time and don’t use technology at all – and here’s why. In 1997, J.K. Rowling shared her Wizarding World with readers of all ages in the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first in what would become a series of seven books telling the story of “the boy who lived” and the darkest wizard of all: Lord Voldemort.

The Harry Potter book series was a quick hit and made the jump to the big screen between 2001 and 2011, with the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, split into two movies. The film saga expanded the books’ fanbase and was very well received by critics and fans, but it also raised more questions about the Wizarding World, its rules, objects, habits, and more. The Wizarding World has been a fascinating place for fans as it’s very different from the human world and not just because it’s a safe place to use magic but because those who inhabit it don’t use any technology devices, and in that sense, they seem to be stuck in the past.

For years, fans have wondered about this detail in the Harry Potter universe, where Hogwarts students were seen writing with quills, consulting books for their homework, sending owls with their messages, and more, and they have come up with different possible explanations for it. One of the most popular ones is all about electricity, as wizards aren’t really users of it, preferring candles and other magic to provide light instead. With no electricity, wizards can’t use phones, computers, and more like Muggles do, and the reason for the lack of electricity is because magic interferes with it. However, with Rowling adding more and more to the Wizarding World all the time, she has already explained the topic of technology and its absence.

Through the official Wizarding World website (formerly Pottermore), Rowling explained in the opening paragraph that when you can summon any object with just one word, communicate through fire, owls, Howler, and more, and your newspaper has moving images, Muggle stuff like the internet “does not seem like a particularly exciting place”. Another reason for the lack of technology in the Wizarding World is due to cultural reasons: according to Rowling, the magical community takes pride in not needing most Muggle devices. Although wizards in Harry Potter and its extended media don’t use cellphones, computers, and more, there are some exceptions on this matter as they do use cars, motorbikes, and trains, as seen when Ron and Harry flew to Hogwarts in Mr. Weasley’s car, Hagrid moving around in a motorbike, and the famous Hogwarts Express.

Although the lack of technology in Harry Potter and the Wizarding World in general can seem odd to some viewers, it ultimately adds to the vibe of this side of the world, although they could certainly benefit from communicating through cellphones, doing some quick researches on Google, and typing that tedious homework on a computer.
