Hawkeye Created Moon Knights Most Brutal Weapons (And Doesnt Know It)

Thanks to time-travel shenanigans, Marvel Comics’ Hawkeye surprisingly created the ancient weapons of Marc Spector’s Moon Knight. Back in 1987, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye was leading the West Coast Avengers, though the team found themselves split across various points in time. While Hawkeye ended up in Ancient Egypt at the temple of a very important moon god, Marc Spector was in the present working with the Fantastic Four to bring the heroes back. However, the story reveals that Clint passed the time carving weapons, having no idea that the tools he was crafting would become so significant.

The story takes place in 1987’s West Coast Avengers #23 from writer Steve Englehart and artist Al Milgrom. In it, Hawkeye, Tigra, Iron Man, and Wonder Man are trapped 5,000 years in the past, caught in an Ancient Egyptian war with the Pharoah Rama-Tut (also known as a variant of Kang the Conqueror). As a result, the four heroes find themselves hiding in a very important temple belonging to the Moon God Khonshu, who at the time wasn’t known as the originator of Marc Spector’s abilities as Moon Knight.

While hiding out in the temple, Clint Barton decides to carve weapons out of ivory so the followers of Khonshu within the temple can defend themselves. As a result, Hawkeye creates a variety of tools such as “darts, boomerangs, and throwing irons” made with the understanding that not everyone prefers or is as skilled in archery as he is. However, the issue then cuts to the present as the origins of Marc Spector are further fleshed out, revealing that he received the very same weapons Hawkeye crafted when he first became Moon Knight, seeing as how they would become the traditional tools of Khonshu’s chosen Fist for generations.

Hilariously, Hawkeye ends up gaining the favor of Khonshu thanks to his weapons crafting, though Clint doesn’t seem to be all that honored given his preoccupation with getting back to his own time and back to Mockingbird (Hawkeye’s wife in the comics). Without even meaning to, Hawkeye created the iconic tools and weapons Marc Spector would wield for years in the present era. Without Clint Barton, Moon Knight’s arsenal might have been very limited.

Despite not being a bow and arrows, it is amusing that all the weapons Hawkeye made were projectiles all the same. That being said, they do offer Spector more flexibility while fighting crime rather than being forced to enter hand-to-hand combat with every foe he encounters. While it’s hard to see Moon Knight sitting down to write a thank you card to Hawkeye even if he did know that Clint made his weapons, some thanks are certainly in order.
