Hawkeye Wasted One Exciting MCU Villain (And You Didnt Even Notice)

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2!

Hawkeye debuted on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere, but the MCU series has already wasted the potential of Fra Fee’s villain, Kazi. While the show will see Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) presumably pass the Hawkeye mantle to MCU newcomer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), there’s a continued interest in the new villains coming into the spotlight, specifically the Tracksuit Mafia. Granted, Kazi and the criminal organization might not be the biggest threat to Clint and Kate.

Kate first encounters her hero, Clint, at the end of Hawkeye episode 1, “Never Meet Your Heroes.” After getting her hands on the Ronin suit, Kate becomes a target of the Tracksuit Mafia, old adversaries of Clint’s, when acting as the Ronin vigilante. Clint rescues Kate while attempting to get the suit back, but the task proves more difficult after the apparent Tracksuit Mafia leader, Kazi, orders an attack on Kate’s apartment. Clint allows himself to be captured upon reacquiring the suit, which ends in a surprise appearance by Kate and the truth about the real Tracksuit Mafia shot-caller.

Before Hawkeye premiered, Fra Free’s casting as Kazi caught attention due to the character’s background in Marvel Comics. Kazimierz “Kazi” Kazimierczak, aka “Clown,” was a sadistic assassin hired by the Tracksuit Mafia or “Tracksuit Draculas” with a strong link to various mob bosses. The casting in Hawkeye implied Kazi would be a big bad, but the Disney+ series has quickly made him just another Tracksuit Mafia fool. Free’s character dresses better than the rest of the gang, but no real pomp and circumstance surround Kazi. While Clown had the potential to be an exciting villain in the MCU, Hawkeye already wasted the character in a bait and switch.

Rather than be hired by the Tracksuit Mafia, Kazi is shown to be their de facto leader. Not only does he dress better than the others, he ominously hangs back as the rest do the dirty work. By transforming Kazi into Clown for the Hawkeye series, the MCU had a chance to introduce a dangerous villain for Clint and Kate to battle. The show could have expanded on Clint’s dark history with Kazi like in the comics, but for now, this version of Clown isn’t a true threat in the MCU. In fact, Clint basically surrenders himself to Kazi and the Tracksuit Mafia, believing they aren’t much of a worry.

If Kazi and the Tracksuit Mafia aren’t the real threats, it begs the question of who is the true villain of Hawkeye? The end of Hawkeye episode 2, “Hide and Seek,” introduces Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo, and reveals she is actually the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia. In the comics, Echo is the adopted daughter of Kingpin, who many predict has a role in Hawkeye, meaning Vincent D’Onofrio could make the jump to Disney+ after starring in Netflix’s Daredevil. The presence of Kazi may be wasted, but he could also be a tease for Kingpin’s future in the MCU, considering Clown has worked with Wilson Fisk in the comics. While there’s still time to evolve Kazi, Hawkeye suggests the villain spotlight is heading in another direction.
