Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld gushed about getting the opportunity to work with Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio. The series follows the arrow-slinging former Avenger Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) as he is drawn into a web of crime on Christmas vacation in New York, reluctantly becoming a mentor to young protegé Kate Bishop (Steinfeld) in the process. The 6-episode MCU series premiered on Disney+ on November 24, with the final episode scheduled to air on December 22. In episode 5 of Hawkeye, it was revealed that the crime lord pulling the strings throughout the season was indeed Kingpin himself.

Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin, has appeared in various forms throughout the history of Marvel filmmaking. The character, who is known for his massive stature and bloodthirsty approach to doing business, first appeared in live-action played by John Rhys-Davies in the TV movie The Trial Of The Incredible Hulk. The character returned for the 2003 Ben Affleck film Daredevil played by Michael Clarke Duncan, but his most iconic appearance would certainly be that of the Netflix series Daredevil, which aired from 2015 to 2018. Vincent D’Onofrio played the indelibly menacing Kingpin on 27 of the show’s 39 episodes, and hasn’t reprised the role until his appearance in Hawkeye all these years later.

Speaking with EW, Hailee Steinfeld spoke about getting to work with the Kingpin actor. Although she has already interacted with the character in a different universe (she starred as Gwen Stacy in the Sony animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which featured Liev Schreiber voicing Kingpin), she said that “it’s a very different experience standing underneath Vincent and hearing him.” She has been a longtime fan and was excited to be in his presence, and she added that she is “excited to see people watch it unfold.” Read the full quote below:

If it didn’t feel real before, it’s real now. After all the partner talk and jokes that have been thrown around, now she has the opportunity to step up to the plate.

Kingpin might be pulling the strings, but he is just one of the many menaces that Hawkeye and Kate Bishop have faced throughout the series. Their major group of antagonists, the Tracksuit Mafia, are led by the formidable Echo (Alaqua Cox) and her faithful right-hand man Kazi (Fra Fee). In addition to these threats, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has arrived on the scene to carry out the mission given to her in the post-credits scene of Black Widow.

With just one episode left to go in Hawkeye, it remains to be seen exactly how much trouble Kingpin can stir up. However, given his lurid history, he is certain to provide a huge impediment to Hawkeye and Kate Bishop’s success. Fans have long speculated that this show, which features Hawkeye passing the torch to his young protegé, may also end in his death, and if there’s one person who can ensure that this will happen, it’s certainly Wilson Fisk.
