Hayden Christensen Excited to Return as Darth Vader in ObiWan Kenobi Show

Hayden Christensen, who is set to return as Darth Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show, spoke about how excited he is to return as the character. The Obi-Wan series is set about ten years after the prequels, and will cover what the titular Jedi did after The Order fell and he was left on Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker. The series had long been rumored, and Ewan McGregor, who portrayed Kenobi in all three Star Wars prequels, spent years denying that any kind of Obi-Wan project was in the works. However, during 2019’s D23 expo, McGregor officially announced that he would be returning as the iconic Jedi.

Christensen portrayed a young Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The prequel films show his fall to the dark side and watching the emotionally unstable Anakin succumb to the Emperor’s manipulation is a core part of the films. After a dramatic final battle where he is horrifically scarred, Christensen donned the iconic Vader costume in the final moments of Sith and it was presumed he would never reprise the role. However, during a recent Disney investor’s meeting, Lucasfilm announced that Christensen will be returning as Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan series.

Speaking to StarWars.com, Christensen spoke about how excited he is to return to the franchise and the character. The actor spoke about how interested he is to see what the relationship would be like between Vader and Kenobi considering they left on, to put it mildly, bad terms. He also spoke about working with Deborah Chow, the director for the Obi-Wan series, and his excitement about getting to work with McGregor again. Check out his full statement below:

“It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker. Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”

Christensen’s performance in the prequels was heavily criticized back when they came out – as were many aspects of the films. Some Star Wars actors have a contentious history with the passionate fanbase, with actors like Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best, and Kelly Marie Tran receiving backlash that bled into their personal lives. While Christensen was vilified in the past, the fandom has, in general, come to appreciate what the actor did with the role. His excitement might speak to the overall shift the fandom has taken in regards to his impact on the franchise.

Given where the characters are at the end of Revenge of the Sith, and the events of A New Hope, it’s hard to imagine just exactly how Vader will fit into the Obi-Wan series. Several of Christensen’s remarks imply some kind of direct confrontation between Vader and Obi-Wan, which would disrupt the canon established in A New Hope. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine that the series would bring back both McGregor and Christensen and not have them share some kind of scene together. While few concrete details are known, Christensen’s excitement should reassure fans that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be worth watching.
