Hearthstone Is Finally Becoming More Accessible With New Core Set & Other Changes

Blizzard has announced some major changes coming to Hearthstone in the near future, and they’re likely to significantly improve the game’s accessibility – perhaps the number one criticism that has persisted across years of new set releases and card designs. Hearthstone is the free-to-play card game from Blizzard that is based on Warcraft lore and features some of the more unique elements in card design across the various popular entries in the genre, leaning heavily on both player choice and randomization to generate interesting battles.

Hearthstone is coming off of one of its most intriguing sets in recent memory in Madness at the Darkmoon Faire, which was also complemented by the release of a mini-set in Darkmoon Races. The expansion introduced Hearthstone Duels, a popular playmode that marries the deck-building of its solo adventures with player versus player combat, and also introduced the Hearthstone battle pass system, Tavern Pass. The latter didn’t go over well to start, though changes from Blizzard to the design of its battle pass has at least made it more palatable to players. Through it all, a constant criticism has been that with each new set, Hearthstone becomes increasingly more expensive – with free-to-play players all but left in the dust if they want to try being competitive in any format.

That’s what makes the new changes, announce by Blizzard via the Play Hearthstone website, so exciting – they genuinely seem like they’ll dramatically improve Hearthstone accessibility. Blizzard announced that it will be replacing its Basic and Classic sets in Standard with the Core Set, a selection of 235 cards that will be provided to all players for free. The Core Set is intended to keep all players’ collections modernized to the extent they’re at least able to play in game modes even if they haven’t been keeping up with releases, and the decision seems set to immediately make Hearthstone way more accessible.

Blizzard hasn’t indicated which cards will be in Core Set, but it will feature cards from Classic, Basic, Wild, and others, as well as including 29 new cards. Core Set will also be refreshed on a yearly basis to complement strategies and the game’s ever-shifting card pool. On top of this, Hearthstone is also adding a Classic format that will return players to 2014, limiting them to playing only the cards that were available in that time period. Classic format era is where many players got their starts and represents a simpler time in Hearthstone’s history – and with ranked ladder support, it seems set to become a popular mode among veterans.

Overall, the announcement from Blizzard represents perhaps the biggest single change to Hearthstone in quite some time. As the game has evolved and garnered more support and diversity with Hearthstone Battlegrounds and Duels, it has routinely failed to address how to make it a better free-to-play experience. With this implementation, Hearthstone accessibility may be the best its been since its 2014-2015 era of smaller card pools – and it could be just what’s required to boost the popularity of the game further.
