A promo for Masters of the Universe: Revelation shows the toy versions of He-Man and Skeletor fighting it out in stunning stop-motion animation. Mattel’s He-Man action figure debuted back in 1982 and spawned He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, an animated TV series that ran from 1983-85. The first five episodes of MOTU: Revelation, the new Netflix series that picks up right where the original show left off, were released on July 23, 2021.

The first syndicated show to be based on a toy line, He-Man was one of the most popular cartoons of the 1980s, but Netflix’s decision to revive it came as somewhat of a surprise. Created by director and noted lover-of-all-things-nerdy Kevin Smith, the revival has received positive reviews from critics, but the show’s significant visual and thematic departures from the original have divided viewers. Some have even compared MOTU: Revelation to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a similarly divisive entry into a franchise.

However, those both for and against the new series are sure to love the video recently released on the Masters of the Universe Twitter account. The one-minute-long, stop-motion animated clip of the franchise’s latest action figures sees He-Man ambushed by Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, whose magic knocks the hero off of Battle Cat. As He-Man struggles against his nemesis, reinforcements arrive in the form of Moss-Man, who helps turn the tide in He-Man’s favor. Check out the video below:

While the epic fights between He-Man and Skeletor Smith has promised for Part 2 won’t look at all like this, the animation is pretty impressive. Not only are the characters’ movements fluid, the animators took a creative approach to replicating Moss-Man’s ability to control plant life. His arms lash out into vines, real sticks shoot up from the ground after he punches the Earth, and he even regrows a severed (plastic) limb. Combine that attention to detail with an entertaining bite-sized story, and the MOTU: Revelation social media team has something that appeals to every He-Man enthusiast.

Of course, enjoyable as it is, this clip doesn’t provide any update on the rest of the revival series. Though Smith has hinted things on the production end are moving forward quickly, Netflix has yet to set a release date for the second half of MOTU: Revelation, and viewers are eager to see how the story will conclude. Whether Part 2 will recapture the spirit of the original Masters of the Universe or continue down its divergent path remains to be seen.
