Henry Cavill is taking on the lead role of Conor MacLeod in the upcoming rendition of Highlander, which is now confirmed to begin filming in 2022. The inception of the original Highlander film in 1986 kicked off a franchise that has since seen its fair share of revivals and reworkings. All told, the franchise has bolstered four feature films, a made-for-tv movie, two television series, and an animated series. As directed by Russell Mulcahy, the original film follows the story of Conor MacLeod, otherwise known as the Highlander. The film was released with the now legendary tagline, “There Can Be Only One,” and grossed nearly $13 million around the globe.

In a recent sit-down with THR, Henry Cavill, who is set to take on the lead role in the upcoming Highlander reboot, confirms that filming is set to commence in 2022. The Summit Entertainment-owned film franchise also locked down director Chad Stahelski, perhaps most notably known for his work on the John Wick movies. As the production of Highlander draws near, Cavill describes Stahelski’s film adaptation as more realistic, taking on the archetypal elements of a modern-day tragedy. See what Stahelski said regarding the casting of Henry Cavill below:

“Henry obviously has the physicality, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot if you can’t also carry the empathy of a character that’s lived 500 years, and I needed somebody who could do both. The character’s arc spans hundreds of years and he becomes many different personalities, all of which extend the timeline of his emotional growth. Then during our first meeting, my suspicions were confirmed: Henry was immediately riffing on the idea of the burden of immortality and you could see in his eyes that he can transform himself from being a young, vibrant soul to an old, wise soul.”

The intention to bring about a new Highlander film began in 2008 when Summit Entertainment acquired the franchise rights. A slew of writers and directors attached themselves to the project over the years, although nothing ever fully came to fruition. At one point, Ryan Reynolds signed on to the role of Conor MacLeod. However, he quickly dropped out of the film when director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo left, citing irreconcilable creative differences. Now, everything appears to be falling into place with Stahelski at the helm and Cavill in the lead. Although it has seemingly taken forever to get to this point, as the adage goes, there can be only one, and that one to get it done is Cavill.
