Heres How Shiny Pokémon Work in Sword and Shield

Shiny pocket monsters are some of the most highly sought after components of any new Pokémon title, and that’s sure to remain the case in Pokémon Sword and Shield since they’re set to officially return there. Of course, the games themselves have been bogged down by controversy ever since it was confirmed during E3 2019 that Sword and Shield would not feature a National Dex. In other words, not every Pokémon will be returning. This news then immediately divided the community.

Most recently, Pokémon fans have taken to social media to voice their distrust in developer Game Freak after users on 4chan seemingly confirmed that the models in Sword and Shield were ported from Pokémon Sun and Moon. If true, this would go against assurances from Game Freak that the models in the new games were made from scratch. Controversies aside, the reviews for Pokémon Sword and Shield have been positive, and there are a number of fans looking forward to the Switch titles.

One of the best features in the eyes of fans are shiny Pokémon (these are extremely rare monsters with different colors) and they’re set to return in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Thanks to USGamer, players also now know how they’re encountered in the core games. Thankfully, one of the biggest concerns fans had was about stronger monsters that are openly roaming the Galar Region’s Wild Areas that cannot be caught. This has now been put to bed.

The proposed dillemma was whether or not a shiny version of a powerul Pokémon could spawn and then not be obtainable through the system in place. Thankfully, it has now been confirmed that these creatures are anchored to the overworld and will never appear in a shiny form. Instead, players will have to stick to the grass as they pursue any potentially shiny Pokémon. Fortunately, there’s plenty of grass in these areas to walk through, so players can simply avoid the big bads in the meantime.

Pokémon Sword and Shield have a number of other mechanics that are debuting on the titles. While some of them are under fire, it’s good to see that Game Freak at least thought ahead when incoporating shiny Pokémon into the new Wild Areas. It’s still unknown if there is a means of increasing the odds of a shiny appearing in the games like it was possible to do in Pokémon Let’s Go, but time will soon make that clear.
