Hidden Dark Sides To Monsters Incs Happy Ending

Monsters At Work proves the original ending to Monsters, Inc. may not have been as happy as everyone assumed. As Pixar expands its animated reach onto Disney+, several classic properties are making the move to streaming. That charge is being led by Monsters, Inc., with Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan returning alongside a whole new crop of colorful characters for Monsters At Work. Aimed at an explicitly younger audience than Pixar’s theatrical output generally caters for, Monsters At Work takes place one day on from the Monsters, Inc. ending, but before Sulley’s reunion with Boo in the epilogue scene.

As you’d expect from a Pixar film, Monsters, Inc. ends happily, despite the floods of tears triggered by Sulley and Boo’s farewell. The Monster world was facing an power crisis at the beginning of the movie, but thanks to Mike and Sulley, the decision is made to switch from scare energy to laughter energy, which is not only more pleasant for the children involved, but also packs much more wallop in the energy stakes. With monsters and children alike facing a brighter future, everyone in Monsters, Inc. lived happily ever after… right?

The entire premise of Monsters At Work is the Monsters, Incorporated company struggling to transition their business model, and this turbulence reveals a hidden dark side to the original movie’s ending that previously went unaddressed. The way Pixar wrapped things up initially, it seemed as if the switch was seamless, but Monsters At Work proves otherwise – and in no uncertain terms.

The main character of the Disney+ series is Tylor Tuskmon – a young graduate who studied his entire life to get a top job at Monsters, Incorporated. He’s the best in his field, the greatest since James P. Sullivan, and a budding prospect with a bright future. The only problem? Tylor trained as a scarer. One thing Monsters, Inc. certainly didn’t explore was how an entire generation of Monsters University graduates are now discovering their skills are worthless, and their employment prospects scuppered. To make matters worse Tylor’s parents toiled hard to ensure their son got the best scare education. Who said Pixar wasn’t true to life?

The traumatic transference doesn’t end at recruitment either. Tylor is far from alone in being a great scarer but a poor comedian which, when you think about it, is an entirely predictable consequence of the Monsters, Inc ending. Forcing an entire workforce to suddenly change their skill-set is bound to take time and, sure enough, Monsters At Work chronicles a painful bedding-in period, where sudden power outages are wreaking havoc across the company because Sulley and co. haven’t yet got a handle on the comedy gig. In “Meet MIFT,” one such power loss results in an emergency when Mike is trapped in a child’s room with no escape door. If that wasn’t trouble enough to deal with, Mike (one of the few natural comedians on the team) is feeling the company’s fate on his shoulders, driving himself to overwork and suspicious energy drinks.

For a series with less adult appeal that Monsters, Inc., Monsters At Work certainly offers a realistic depiction of what happens when a massive energy company switches production methods virtually overnight. It’s now impossible to see the original movie’s ending in the same optimistic light, knowing the misery and hardship to come for Mike, Sulley and the rest. Fortunately, the Monsters, Inc. epilogue proves everything works out in the end but, until then, Monsters At Work will wring every last drop of drama from that difficult period of transition.
