Hideo Kojima’s Exciting News Was Not What Players Were Hoping For

Kojima Productions promised new updates would go live in honor of the studio’s fifth anniversary, but the news isn’t what many had hoped for.

Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions shared a few new updates earlier this morning, but the news is not at all what fans had been hoping to learn about. Yesterday, the studio set social media feeds alight by announcing that it would celebrate five years since its founding by unveiling “exciting updates,” which many took to mean updates about a Death Stranding sequel, a PS5-exclusive Silent Hill reboot, or a new IP entirely.

Of course, fans across the internet were off to the races, speculating and pondering what Kojima and his Death Stranding crew had up their sleeves. A new game announcement, perhaps, or maybe even hints about a possible non-video game related project were thrown out. Even the tiniest of teases more than likely would’ve sufficed to sate players’ desire for more. After all, the post from Kojima Productions told followers to keep a close eye on its social channels at a specific time. It said nothing of tempering expectations, but the studio probably should have made that much clear.

Kojima Productions started its celebration as planned at late last night, first unveiling a wallpaper for the studio’s mascot, LUDENS. Not too long thereafter, another tweet went live, announcing fifth anniversary merchandise is now available to order via the company’s official online storefront. The new products include a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and hoodie, all branded with a LUDENS art print, and the third update celebrated Kojima having been given a BAFTA’s Fellowship Award in March. Although fans were bristling with anticipation with how the string of announcements would end, Kojima Productions’ final celebratory tweet served as a simple “thank you” to its supporters, complete with a link to a special fifth anniversary video.

That none of these updates delivered details about the studio’s future projects is hardly a surprise. Even if one of the popular internet theories about Kojima’s next game is indeed correct, Kojima Productions probably has very little, if anything to show, for its next big project at this point. Death Stranding shipped for PlayStation 4 only late last year, and the studio spent the following months hard at work on PS4 updates and preparing the title’s summer 2020 PC launch. Once the PC version rolled out, it, too, began receiving post-launch patches, all while Kojima Productions balanced remote work arrangements. As such, it could be a while before Kojima is ready to show off anything concrete.

The team has started work on a new project, though. Cursory details hit the web in October, as Kojima Productions confirmed that job openings were available for “best-in-class talent.” For now, though, players would be best advised to not hold their breaths until the studio finally reveals what that project may be.
