Hobbs & Shaw Proves Hobbs Isnt Stronger Than Ivan Drago

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw unexpectedly proved that Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) isn’t as strong as Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). The Fast & Furious spinoff forces do-gooder federal agent Hobbs to team up with perhaps his least favorite person, British mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). The dysfunctional duo has to save the world from a deadly virus carried by Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby). But as dangerous as Hobbs and Shaw are, they find themselves outmatched by the cybernetically enhanced bad guy Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), who is a self-proclaimed “Black Superman”.

In 1985, the Rocky franchise introduced a different kind of Superman: Rocky IV’s Ivan Drago, the towering Soviet-trained fighter who killed Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the ring. Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) had to seek revenge on Drago and fight him in Moscow; the Philadelphia underdog endured 15 punishing rounds against the blonde giant before courageously knocking Drago out. However, Rocky was so damaged mentally and physically from that fight that he had to retire; as he told his protege Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) in Creed II, Drago “broke things in me that ain’t never been fixed.” This is because Drago was inhumanly strong (thanks to steroids) and, as Hobbs & Shaw verified, Drago is even stronger than Luke Hobbs.

In Hobbs & Shaw, Hobbs and Brixton come face-to-face for the first time after the cyborg attacks the CIA’s black site in London and abducts Hattie. One of Brixton’s enhancements is a heads-up display in his eyes that provides digital readouts of threat evaluations. For instance, he can instantly analyze an enemy’s weapon and the probability of his shooting and accuracy. Hobbs was unarmed, however, so Brixton’s threat assessment analyzed the muscular Samoan’s fighting ability: As Hobbs threw a punch, Brixton instantly calculated that he would strike at a force of 1235 lbs of pressure per square inch (psi). As it turns out: this is a significantly weaker punch than Ivan Drago could deliver!

As every Rocky fan knows, Ivan Drago hit harder than any other fighter Balboa ever faced. In the preparation for his fatal exhibition match with Apollo, Drago and his handlers held a press conference showing off the Soviet Union’s “superior” training methods. Drago’s punch was clocked in at 1850 lbs psi, prompting his trainer to boast, “Whatever he hits, he destroys!” It was the devastating force of Drago’s punches that killed Creed. And, in the lead-up for his fight against Balboa, Drago got even stronger, thanks to intensified training and even an even more complex cocktail of steroid enhancements. By the time he was ready to fight Rocky, Drago’s punches registered at a staggering 2150 lbs psi – which was nearly twice the force of a Hobbs punch!

Now, it’s very likely no one was thinking about Ivan Drago when Hobbs & Shaw was being made, and Hobb’s strength assessment is impressive regardless. To be fair to Luke Hobbs (and Dwayne Johnson), the Samoan lawman is still ridiculously strong compared to any normal human. In Rocky IV, Drago’s Soviet spokesman established that a normal heavyweight fighter (in 1985) averages 700 lbs of pressure psi, so at 1235 psi, Hobbs is already far more powerful than a typical boxer. And it’s likely Hobbs wasn’t throwing everything he had behind that initial punch Brixton scanned so Luke is capable of far more power, although possibly not equal to the 1850 lbs psi that was Drago’s original baseline average. And, it has to be pointed out that Drago’s absurd strength was a result of copious amounts of steroids whereas Hobbs, fans can assume, gained his size and power from good old fashioned hard work in the gym.

Regardless of how strong Hobbs is, he was still at a disadvantage to Brixton because of his mechanical enhancements. It took Hobbs and Shaw fighting in tandem to beat Brixton. But would Hobbs have won a fight against Ivan Drago in his prime? It’s quite likely. They’re equally tall, though Hobbs is much more massive. In terms of sheer power, Drago might have a slight edge but Hobbs has that all-important something that matters most, which Drago and Brixton in Hobbs & Shaw lack: heart.
