Home Alone is a holiday staple. It tops the favorites list when it comes to Christmas movies. It’s hilarious, featuring bumbling robbers that are consistently outwitted by an elementary-school-aged boy in a battle of wills. The “Wet Bandits” are no match for Kevin McCallister, boy genius with a talent for booby traps. There are five Home Alone movies in total, but only three of those movies contain the traditional characters we all know and love. Only two of the three are played by the original actors Macaulay Culkin (Kevin), Joe Pesci (Harry) and Daniel Stern (Marv). That said, here are 10 of the worst things Kevin McCallister ever did, ranked.
10 Flooded A Mansion
In the fourth Home Alone movie, Kevin (this time played by Mike Weinberg) floods his father’s girlfriend’s mansion in an attempt to drive away Marv (French Stewart) and his wife Vera (Missi Pyle), who were scouting the house. Flooding a mansion is pretty dire, especially when it costs a pretty penny to fix. He could’ve called the police, he could’ve set off sirens to scare them away. Kevin flooded the mansion to protect it, but it looks like the mansion needed protecting from Kevin.
9 Sent A Tool Chest Down The Stairs
This one, Harry and Marv may have had coming. Hello, they could hear the tool chest coming down the stairs. Yet, they waited on the other side of the door, listening to it as it came closer and closer until it slammed into the door and squashed them against a wall.
The thing is, Kevin made a heck of a racket, and it seemed like by the time he did this, it was kind of unnecessary, in the sense that the robbers had already been through Hell and back by this point. In terms of injuries sustained, though, this wasn’t the worst to be inflicted on Marv and Harry.
8 Misused A BB Gun
In the first film, one of the first things Kevin does to deter Marv and Harry is shoot them both with his BB gun. For Marv, it’s point blank in the face. For Harry, it goes directly to his, well, where the sun doesn’t shine. Kevin never does ease the two robbers into his mad plans of torture, but then again, neither robber ever gives up. This was pretty brutal on Kevin’s part. It’s not among his most dangerous acts, but it’s definitely among some of his meanest.
7 Wished His Family Would Disappear
Every family has their differences, which often leads to disagreements and spats. Especially around a stressful time like the holidays when everyone is rushing to get things done. It’s inevitable. In the first film, Kevin wishes his family would disappear and then wakes up to find them gone, believing his wish has come true.
Instead of being horrified, he’s overjoyed, but as we all know, that feeling doesn’t last for him. We get that Kevin was fed up with his family, but wishing they would disappear entirely is a bit harsh.
6 Set The Rope On Fire
As Marv and Harry are climbing down the rope after Kevin in the second film, Kevin sets it aflame, having already soaked it in kerosene. This was a blend of cruel and dangerous, considering Marv was already terrified of heights. Plus, Kevin left them with the choice of burning to death or falling to death. That’s not really in the holiday spirits. As we all know, Marv and Harry opted for falling, and by a miracle only movies can produce, neither of them are seriously hurt (not even a broken bone).
5 Destroys Houses
While we all get a big kick out of Kevin’s booby traps (honestly, they’re the best part of the Home Alone movies), can you imagine what kind of clean-up would be involved afterwards? He makes a mess out of his own house in the first film, then sets back however many hours, days, even months of work in his uncle’s house that was under renovations in the second film.
Sure, his traps may have put Harry and Marv through endless pain for our entertainment, but can you imagine the pain of the homeowner that has to clean up the mess? Kevin doesn’t have much regard for the fallout there.
4 Didn’t Learn His Lesson From The Year Before
The second film starts off much like the first: chaos in the McCallister home, and Kevin’s family is bugging him. Specifically when Buzz humiliates him and a shove from Kevin causes everyone onstage to fall, ruining the concert. It’s Kevin that is in trouble then, and he willingly heads upstairs, where his mother tries speaking with him. She mentions that a year before, they had had a night that had started out just like this one. Kevin tells her that he hopes he’ll be left home alone again, obviously not remembering how much he missed his family the year before. Kevin’s a kid, sure, but after an experience like that, plus battling robbers on top of it, you’d think it’d be more of a mainstay in his memory. Then again, we wouldn’t have Home Alone 2: Lost in New York if he had learned his lesson.
3 Electrocuted Marv
In the second film, when Marv is trying to wash up following an unfortunate incident with some paint cans, he’s unknowingly setting himself up for torture. Kevin waits behind the sink, gradually turning up the dial as soon as Marv touches the sink handle to increase the amount of electrocution running through Marv’s body.
The film hilariously throws in a shot of Marv’s skeleton as he screams like a girl before he finally falls backwards, his hair smoking. If nothing else, Kevin has a promising future in the world of torture.
2 Sets Harry’s Head On Fire
It seems Kevin has a penchant for setting Harry, and only Harry, on fire in both the first and second films. Poor Harry has only just gotten his hair back in the second film when he’s set on fire again, even though he initially proceeded cautiously, expecting flames to the head due to the events of the year before. It has to leave severe burns behind. Marv usually takes the brunt of the torture, but for Harry, being set on fire trumps some of the things Kevin’s done to Marv.
1 Threw Bricks At Marv’s Head
In the second movie, Kevin uses his uncle’s house, which is undergoing renovations, as his base of operations. Kevin starts his deadly booby traps off strongly by throwing bricks from his place on the roof straight at Marv’s head below, getting direct hits each time. Now, outside of the movie realm, this would’ve killed Marv. Instead, we see him stumble and dramatically fall to the ground in only a performance Daniel Stern could deliver so perfectly. Though, throwing bricks at someone’s head, especially when it’s more than one brick, is pretty vicious, even if it makes us laugh so much we can hardly breathe.
