Home Sweet Home Alone May Be Already Doomed

Streaming service Disney+ hopes to bring the Home Alone franchise back to life with Home Sweet Home Alone, but the disastrous reception of the new movie’s trailer proves their efforts may be in vain. Home Alone was a massive blockbuster success upon its release in 1990, swiftly becoming one of the highest-grossing comedy movies of all time and soon spawning a sequel. Star Macaulay Culkin’s preternatural charisma famously carried the holiday classic, but a large ensemble cast and assured pacing from director Christopher Columbus bolstered its success.

While Home Alone’s first sequel was not as well-received as the original movie, its reviews were significantly superior to those of the franchise’s later direct-to-DVD sequels. Alongside Jim Carrey’s iteration of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and The Nightmare Before Christmas, the original Home Alone soon gained cult status and became a favorite holiday hit for many ‘90s kids. However, later additions to the franchise failed to find the same success. Despite this, Disney+ opted to reboot the franchise in 2021 with Home Sweet Home Alone.

It is understandable that the entertainment giant would want to cash in on the nostalgia many Home Alone fans feel for the original movie, but the response to Home Sweet Home Alone’s trailer seems to prove that the effort was misjudged. Despite the trailer featuring the return of Home Alone’s Buzz (still played by original actor Devin Ratray) and a host of stars including Ellie Kemper and Pete Holmes, Home Sweet Home Alone’s promo has received a staggering 88,000 dislikes on Youtube in less than a month. Now, as proven by Stranger Things’ under-viewed season 4 teaser, the social media reception of a promo isn’t always an accurate indicator of audience interest. However, Home Sweet Home Alone’s trailer has a four-to-one like to dislike ratio (22,000: 88,000), beating even the infamously poorly-received trailer for Ghostbusters 2016 reboot (whose ratio is closer to three-to-one).

The consensus among Youtube commenters seems to be that a reboot was simply unnecessary, with few prospective viewers having a specific gripe beyond Home Sweet Home Alone’s failure to recapture the tone of the original movies. A smattering of top comments notes that a reboot that revisited the now-adult Kevin McAllister would have been more original, while others bemoan the new movie’s failure to update Home Alone’s story with the advent of communication technologies and the internet. Some argue that Disney’s family-friendly brand precludes the new movie from featuring the dark, Simpsons-style humor of the original Christmas classic, while other commenters noted that the actor starring in the reboot is a talented performer and not responsible for the movie’s perceived lack of originality or invention.

All told, it is a pretty damning reception for the brief Home Sweet Home Alone trailer, although many of the issues commenters find are hard to argue against. The teaser does recreate numerous major moments from the original Home Alone, does feature strikingly softened moments of comic violence, and does lack the spiky, surprisingly dark wit of Columbus’ movie. Only time will tell if critics are any kinder to the Christmas confection upon release, but judging by fan reactions, Home Sweet Home Alone is an unwelcome addition to the Home Alone franchise.
