Horror movies have come a long way since the old days of Hollywood. Nowadays, they earn millions of dollars at the international box office and have large budgets like any other blockbusters. Successful franchises like The Conjuring Universe, which is currently the highest-grossing pure horror movie series with a total gross of nearly $2 billion, have shown how profitable they can be. Then there is 2017’s It, with box-office records that would make a typical Hollywood blockbuster blush.

2020 has been a difficult year for the movie industry and many films have been pushed back to 2021, being delayed indefinitely or in some cases released online. Many horror films that were going to be released in 2020 will now get released in 2021.

10 Escape Room 2 – January 1

Directed by Insidious: The Last Key director Adam Robitel, 2019’s Escape Room was a psycho-social horror film revolving around six strangers, each the sole survivors of various disasters and accidents, who are each invited to participate in an escape room game riddled with mazes and puzzles which they need to solve in order to survive.

The twisted death game, organized by a “Gamemaster” is revealed to be an annual arrangement where wealthy people are brought in to bet on the results of the game. Considering the impressive box-office performance of the first film, a sequel was inevitable and is to be released on the first day of 2021.

9 Antlers – 19 February

There are almost no horror movies being released in 2021 that isn’t a sequel, remake or reboot of some kind, and Antlers is the only original horror movie with a confirmed release date. Featuring Breaking Bad and Fargo actor Jesse Plemons, the film is being directed by Black Mass director/screenwriter Scott Cooper. Taking place in a desolate town in the state of Oregon, a school teacher and her brother the local sheriff get entangled in a mystery about one of her students, who they believe is keeping a supernatural creature hidden at his home.

8 A Quiet Place Part II – April 23, 2021

When The Office star John Krasinski directed and co-wrote a sci-fi horror film starring his own wife Emily Blunt in 2018, the movie was a surprise hit that was loved and praised by both critics and audiences all across the board for its unique concept and execution. Grossing over $340 million against a budget of $21 million, a sequel was a no-brainer.

A Quiet Place Part II will continue the story of the Abbott family as they have to leave their home behind and venture out into the outside world after losing a loved one.

7 Paranormal Activity 7 – March 19

The “found footage” film technique is a niche in the horror genre which was popularized by the 1999 horror film The Blair Witch Project, one of the most successful independent films of all time. It inspired many other films as well, the most salient among them being Paranormal Activity which was an even bigger hit, grossing more than $193 million against a budget of $215,000 which made it one of the most profitable movies ever. The commercial success and popularity of the movie birthed a whole franchise, and the 7th installment is supposedly being released in March of 2021.

6 Spiral – May 21

The first Saw film was a modern-landmark title for the slasher horror genre and is also thought to be a major instigator of the trend of “torture porn” films (as the name suggests, it refers to films which overemphasize on the depiction of violent, gory and torture related themes). With Darren Lynn Bousman back at the helm, who directed the first three Saw sequels, the upcoming ninth installment in the series, Spiral, follows a detective duo as they’re entangled in the sadistic games of a psychopath killer.

5 The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – 4 June

Directed by Saw and Fast & Furious 7 director James Wan, the first Conjuring film about paranormal investigator couple Ed and Lorraine Warren was a major hit with critics and audience who praised its atmosphere and writing, not to mention it was an immense box-office success as well. The film paved the way for sequels and spin-off movies that were all successful on their own terms, resulting in the creation of The Conjuring Universe.

The upcoming third film in the main trilogy, The Devil Made Me Do It will focus on the murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson from 1981, in which a man confessed to committing murder while under demonic possession.

4 The Forever Purge – July 9

Despite not being particularly well received by critics, the first Purge film was a box-office hit and its unique and interesting socio-horror concept gained widespread popularity, which lead to the studio’s behind its creation to produce 4 more films.

Like previous entries in the series, The Forever Purge, said by creator James DeMonaco to be the final film in the franchise. The movie will revolve around the premise of “Purge Day,” an annual national holiday in a fictional dystopian America when people are legally allowed to commit any crime they want for a 12-hour period.

3 Halloween Kills – 15 October

Legendary horror director and composer John Carpenter has a whole roster of cult-classics under his name, and 1978’s Halloween is one of his and co-writer Debra Hill’s most celebrated ones, which fueled the massive popularity of slasher films throughout the 1980s.

The 2018 film of the same name acted as a direct sequel to 1978’s Halloween and retconned all the other films in the franchise, and the upcoming Halloween Kills will feature the 11th appearance of the mass murderer Michael Myers until 2022 when he is set to return again for the sequel Halloween Ends.

2 Scream 5 – 2021

Wes Craven’s 1996 film Scream was one of the most iconic horror films of the ’90s, a film that was praised for being a solid horror movie on its own merits but also for being a burlesque representation of horror movie cliches that were popular around that time, which added a layer of uniqueness to it. Scream 5 can’t come soon enough.

1 Little Shop Of Horrors – TBA, Possibly 2021

It was confirmed in February of 2020 Warner Bros was producing a remake of the 1986 horror comedy musical Little Shop of Horrors. Being directed by prolific American producer Greg Berlanti, known for his work with several popular TV series such as Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, MCU stars Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson have been reported to be part of the cast. The plot tells the story of a sentient Venus flytrap plant which manipulates a flower shop assistant into feeding it human bodies.
