The sequel to Paramount’s 2010 adventure comedy Hot Tub Time Machine opens in theaters this weekend, bringing back three quarters of the main cast and adding Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) to round out the troupe. We had the chance to chat with Scott, alongside returning stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke, about Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and it’s evident from their chemistry that they don’t need scripted material to be entertaining.

This time around, when Lou (Rob Corddry) finds himself in trouble, Nick (Craig Robinson) and Jacob (Clark Duke) fire up the hot tub time machine in an attempt to get back to the past. But they inadvertently land in the future with Adam Jr. (Adam Scott). Now they have to alter the future in order to save the past… which is really the present, in the sequel from the same team that brought you the original cult hit.

Krisily Kennedy speaks with the four about how the sequel aims to be fresh and different from its predecessor and how there’s no strict formula they need to follow to have fun with time travel and their characters. And of course, we delve into how the cast treated newcomer Adam Scott.

Screen Rant: Congratulations, guys.

Guys: Thanks!

How much fun was it to come back to these characters?

Rob Corddry: Adam, we’ll take this one.

Adam Scott: Yeah, go ahead, guys.

Clark Duke: Take a knee, Adam.

Rob Corddry: We’ll take this one. It was great. This probably would have been the movies of all the movies I’ve done, which registers in the handfuls, 1 ½ large handfuls…I mean a big-sized woman. Of all the movies I’ve done, this would be the one I would hope the most to do a sequel of.

It’s the wardrobe. It’s your wardrobe, isn’t it, that brings you back?

Rob Corddry: Very uncomfortable in the crotch? Crotch.

I don’t know why.

Rob Corddry: It’s tight. Tight and leather, usually. But, boy, it makes you feel kinda cool.

Screen Rant: I have these visions of Adam coming onto set and you guys kinda hazing him a little bit because he’s new to the sequel.

Rob Corddry: A little bit…

Make my dreams come true. Did that happen?

Rob Corddry: Yeah. Well, there was one day…it was the first day. And we’ve all known Adam, so we were like, “Ah, we’ll just haze him a little bit.” So I got there early and I filled his trailer full of pig’s blood, baby pig’s blood…

Adam Scott: Hilarious, right?

Rob Corddry: Hours before, so it was kind of like…

Clark Duke: The sun’s not even up yet when he gets there, too.

Rob Corddry: No. And I wrote “Die Pig! Die!” on the walls. [laughs] He was surprised. You were surprised.

Adam Scott: Have you seen The Shining?

Yes.

Adam Scott: You remember the elevator doors opening and all…that’s what it was. How many pigs had to die for you to get all of that blood?

Craig Robinson: Over 100. About 100….about 104.

Rob Corddry: We only used like 75%-80% of the blood from…so like 75 pigs, probably.

Craig Robinson: How about that barbeque though?

Rob Corddry: It was delicious. And you didn’t get any of that.

Adam Scott: Yeah, but the barbeque was…they were drained of blood. So the barbeque ended up being like…it was like dust…

Clark Duke: It was pretty dry.

Craig Robinson: Dry-b-que!

How much improv are you guys doing and how much is written in the script when you guys come onboard?

Rob Corddry: It’s pretty collaborative. The script is great. Don’t get me wrong. But there’s a lot of places to be able to jump off.

Clark Duke: I wrote most of Adam’s dialogue.

Adam: Yeah. I would get these lines after Clark was finished with them. It says, “My name is Adam and I am an idiot,” like every line.

Rob Corddry: But it would say like, “My name is Adam Scott.”

Adam Scott: Yeah. I’m like, “But I’m not playing myself in the movie.”

What do you think people are going to love about the sequel if they loved the first one?

Adam Scott: Laughs.

Rob Corddry: Well they’re going to love the fact that it’s not a lot of comedy sequels that fall into the trap of kind of retreading familiar material…

Clark Duke: Tropes.

Rob Corddry: We don’t have a formula, luckily, that we had to…that we were defined by. It was like you just get in a hot tub and you go somewhere.

Craig Robinson: There are some tips of the hat though.

Rob Corddry: No, definitely there is familiarity, but it’s not like retreading the same beats. So that’s what I think they are going to like, is that it’s going to feel like a totally different movie.

Craig Robinson: I think the fact that you can see us having fun onscreen, that resonates with a lot of people. and that’s what you said earlier about forgetting. That kind of helps you forget and just kinda go…

Rob Corddry: …all your terrible, terrible lives.
