Among other things, the new movie House of Gucci is a powerful story about the family ties that bind people together and that, ultimately, tear them apart, leading to business problems and an eventual brutal murder.
As such, it is clearly a movie that relies on the strength and potency of its characters to drive the story forward, and the men and women that are part of this drama demonstrate that they have complex and often contradictory personalities and motives, many of which can be understood by sorting them into their respective Hogwarts houses.
Patrizia Reggiani – Slytherin
The role of Patrizia Reggiani is sure to become one of this pop star’s best performances, largely because she manages to bring out the fundamental humanity of Reggiani.
This character is more than a caricature, and she has ambition, drive, and a desire to succeed at whatever cost, even if that means pushing her husband away from the members of his family. In her essential resourcefulness and her cunning, she definitely fits into the model of a typical Slytherin, a house that values these ideals above others.
Maurizio Gucci – Gryffindor
Gryffindors are always known for their sense of pride and their bravery, and these are characteristics that Maurizio shows in abundance. Most notably, he parts ways with his father after the latter tells him that he won’t support his relationship and marriage to Patrizia.
What’s more, he also goes on to try to forge his own destiny at Gucci, even though doing so often puts him at odds with his family and with others who have a stake in the company’s fortunes. He’s sure to become one of Adam Driver’s best roles, and he’s clearly a Gryffindor.
Paolo Gucci – Hufflepuff
Jared Leto brings a unique style to the character of Paolo, the black sheep of the family. Though he does some shady things during the course of the movie, he’s motivated by a fundamental belief in fair play, and he takes family loyalty very seriously (at least when it applies to himself).
Because of these traits, he fits into Hufflepuff, which was a house that values loyalty and trust as key attributes of its members.
Rodolfo Gucci – Gryffindor
Jeremy Irons is another respected actor that makes an appearance in House of Gucci, playing Maurizio’s father, Rodolfo. He has many of the same good and bad qualities as his son, and he’s clearly a man whose bravery has allowed him to become one of the most powerful businessmen in the world of fashion and design.
And, like many other Gryffindors, he has a firm sense of what he believes to be right and wrong, which can often lead him to be inflexible and intolerant when it comes to his son’s relationships.
Aldo Gucci – Slytherin
Slytherin is a house that, more than anything else, values ambition and the striving for success at any cost. These are desires that clearly motivate Aldo Gucci, who is sure to be seen as one of Al Pacino’s great characters.
Unlike his brother, who tends to be cautious, Aldo is always striving for more, always trying to make sure that the family fortune increases. Unfortunately, as is often the case, his Slytherin personality also leads him to skirt the law, with consequences that are predictably negative.
Giuseppina Auriemma – Hufflepuff
Salma Hayek has a powerful screen presence all her own, and though she is a relatively minor character in the movie, she plays a key role in Patrizia’s efforts to have her ex-husband murdered.
As a Hufflepuff, she values loyalty more than anything else, which is why she stays by her friend’s side, even though she knows that what she is doing is illegal and could land them both in a great deal of trouble. What’s more, she’s willing to go down with her friend, and they both end up sentenced to prison.
Domenico de Sole – Ravenclaw
Ravenclaws are well known for their prioritization of wisdom and knowledge, which means that they can at times be rather cold and unfeeling. This seems closely aligned with Domenico de Sole, the family lawyer for the Guccis.
He clearly knows the law inside and out, and he remains faithful to the business, even if that means at times that he has to throw specific members of it, including both Maurizio and Patrizia, under the bus in the process of preserving its viability.
Tom Ford – Ravenclaw
Domenico isn’t the only Ravenclaw that makes an appearance in the movie, for the same traits that he exhibits can also be seen in Tom Ford, the visionary young designer who steps in to help Gucci rebuild its fortunes as a designing house.
More than anything else, Ford seems to privilege knowledge, particularly when it comes to deciding what types of design will help Gucci overcome its slump and resume its place as one of the most notable design businesses in the world. What’s more, his mind ultimately pays off, since he helps to save the company from itself.
Fernando Reggiani – Hufflepuff
Though he makes only a few brief appearances in the movie, it’s clear that Fernando, Patrizia’s father, is a Hufflepuff.
For one thing, he values loyalty to such an extent that he gives his daughter a job at his company, and then, once Maurizio becomes estranged from his father, he gives the young man a job and gives him permission to marry his daughter. Clearly, remaining true to his family is more important than any other consideration.
Paola Franchi – Slytherin
Paola is another character that only appears briefly in the movie, but she plays an important role as the woman that Maurizio becomes involved with after his relationship with Patrizia ends.
She immediately shows that she has what it takes to be a Slytherin, particularly since she wastes no time in trying to take Maurizio for herself. She has her eyes on the prize, and nothing, not even Patrizia’s thinly-veiled threats, keeps her from taking what she believes is her rightful due.
