How Annabelle Creation Ends (& How It Connects to The Conjuring)

The Conjuring Universe timeline is perhaps the most needlessly convoluted of any cinematic universe. Chronologically, the first four films to come out were The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), and Annabelle: Creation (2017). These films took place in 1971, 1967, 1977 and 1955, respectively. Annabelle was a prequel to The Conjuring. Annabelle: Creation was a sequel to Annabelle, but it narratively functioned as a prequel. Confused yet?

The through-line between the first two Annabelle films and The Conjuring is the doll itself. It first appeared at the start of The Conjuring when demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren were giving a lecture to college students about how they came into possession of the Annabelle doll. Set in 1968, this prologue detailed the Warrens’ visit with two nursing students who believed their doll was haunted. Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation delved into the doll’s backstory — who built it, what happened to its creators, and who exactly Annabelle was.

Samuel Mullins was the dollmaker who created the original doll. After a tragic accident that killed his seven-year-old daughter, Annabelle, he and his wife Esther reached out to any otherworldly forces that could bring their daughter back. A demon posing as the ghost of Annabelle asked the Mullins to use their doll as a conduit to the real world, and in their grief-stricken state, they accepted. It wasn’t long before they realized that the entity in the doll was not their daughter, so they locked it in a room with Bible pages plastered on the walls to keep the evil at bay. They eventually opened their home as an orphanage, and the majority of Annabelle: Creation follows a group of young girls living in the Mullins’ home in 1955.

Janice, one of the orphans, unknowingly opened the door to the room and subsequently became possessed by the demon. Pete and Sharon Higgins adopted the still-possessed Janice, now using the moniker Annabelle, and twelve years later, a grown-up Annabelle Higgins returns home to brutally murder her adoptive parents. The film ends with their neighbors being woken up by the noise and the husband walking to the Higgins house to investigate.

How Does Annabelle Creation Connect to Annabelle & The Conjuring

Annabelle was centered around Mia and John Form, the couple in possession of the doll in 1967. At one point in the film, they were awoken in the middle of the night by a commotion from their neighbor’s house. Soon after, their home was invaded by two cult members — Annabelle Higgins and her boyfriend. The police arrived and killed the boyfriend while Annabelle rushed to find the doll. Her body was found with the doll in her hands; she took her own life. A drop of Annabelle’s blood landed on the doll to signify the demon’s return into its wooden vessel.

Mia and John parted ways with the doll, which eventually found its way into an antique shop. Annabelle ended with a woman purchasing the doll for her daughter who was studying to become a nurse. This takes the story back to the beginning of The Conjuring when the nursing students contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren to investigate their haunted doll in 1968. However tenuous and convoluted it may be, the connective tissue between The Conjuring, Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation is there. Audiences can sleep soundly knowing that the fictional Annabelle doll is still locked away in the Warrens’ haunted artifact room, where it will remain until Warner Bros. decides to make another Annabelle film.
