How Attack on Titan Foreshadowed Its Biggest Twist In Episode 6

The biggest twist of Attack on Titan season 4 was eerily foreshadowed in a scene from season 1, episode 6. When Attack on Titan begins, Eren Yaeger is every inch the anime protagonist – spiky hair, unyielding determination, and courageous to a fault. Driven by his overarching goal to wipe all Titans from existence, Eren’s heroism helps to reclaim Wall Maria and unearth the true history of Paradis Island. But even after victory against the Titans is won, Eren’s crusade doesn’t end. To truly attain his freedom, Attack on Titan’s hero must take on the mighty Marleyan Empire.

As Eren sets his sights on the new enemy across the sea, his personality changes drastically. Eren goes rogue, risking his friends’ lives to lead an unsanctioned assault in Marleyan territory, and then ruthlessly murders families and children during the attack. Refusing to concede after returning home, Eren rallies his supporters and executes a coup on Paradis, seizing control of the three walls by force, and launching a stinging emotional diatribe on his closest friends, Mikasa and Armin.

The depth of Eren’s darkness surprised not only his friends and comrades, but Attack on Titan fans also. As shocking at his ethical 180-spin has been, however, the writing was on the wall as early as Attack on Titan’s very first season. In episode 6, Armin is left reeling when Eren narrowly saves him from becoming Titan lunch, and Yaeger himself is presumed dead as a result (his Titan powers remain undiscovered at this point). Berating his own failure, Armin laments, “the strong devour the weak… it’s almost as if the world is doing us a favor by making it easy to understand.” According to this cheery piece of Armin Arlert philosophy, it’s an unavoidable fact of life that the strong will exert dominance over weaker folk. If this were true, anyone who gains strength in Attack on Titan would only ever use it to oppress and coerce, not to bring about justice and equality.

Eren Yaeger becoming a villain proves Armin was bang on the money. By the time Attack on Titan season 4 begins, Eren is comfortably the most powerful character on Paradis Island, courtesy of his Attack and Founding Titans. Eren is also fully aware of his importance to Paradis and his overwhelming public support. With such power and influence, Eren chooses to slaughter the innocent people of Marley, recreating how the Armored and Colossal Titans devastated Shiganshina. After growing stronger by devouring the War Hammer Titan, Eren becomes even more antagonistic, launching his Paradis coup and threatening to destroy the entire world if it doesn’t bend to his will. Thus, Armin’s downbeat philosophy from Attack on Titan season 1 is confirmed – the strong will only ever punish the weak.

Armin’s quote is one of several early Attack on Titan moments that suggest Eren Yaeger is destined for evil. Following the Shiganshina attack, a seething Eren gravely promises to wipe out the Titans whatever the cost, which demonstrates his moral flexibility right as his journey begins. Meanwhile, Attack on Titan’s use of bird imagery hammers home Eren’s relentless quest for freedom, potentially even foreshadowing the conclusion of his story.

Armin’s observation regarding the corruption of power certainly looks prophetic with the benefit of hindsight, but whether that was intentional on Hajime Isayama’s part is another matter. In a past interview, Isayama revealed how his original Attack on Titan ending changed in response to the manga’s success. Comparing his initial plan to Stephen King’s The Mist, Eren wasn’t necessarily destined to become a baddie when Attack on Titan first started, meaning episode 6 might’ve come too early to foreshadow season 4’s big twist. Then again, happy accidents sometimes make the most effective storytelling.
