How Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 6 Changed The Iconic Shower Scene

It’s one of the most terrifying sequences in film history but here’s how Bates Motel season 5 episode 6 changed the legendary shower scene. The original Psycho from 1960 was an adaptation of a novel by Robert Bloch, with Alfred Hitchcock’s film following Marion Crane as she goes on the run after stealing money from her boss. While she’s on the run she stops at the Bates Motel and meets its creepy owner Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). In a shocking twist, Marion is stabbed to death halfway through the story by Norman’s “mother” – which is eventually revealed to be Norman’s split personality.

The original Psycho is a landmark film and in addition to being one of Hitchcock’s best, it lay the groundwork for the slasher genre, leading to movies like Halloween. A sequel eventually arrived in 1982 and was lauded as a surprisingly effective follow-up, which explores whether a reformed Norman will start killing again. Perkins himself directed Psycho III which contained more of an over the top, Giallo-style atmosphere. Perkins played the character one final time for Psycho IV – which ignores the previous sequels – which is a prequel/sequel. Henry Thomas (The Haunting Of Hill House) plays a young Norman, with Perkins revealing how he became a killer in a present-day framing device. The original Psycho was controversially remade almost shot for shot by director Gus Van Sant in 1998.

There was a short-lived attempt to turn the franchise into a TV series with 1987’s Bates Motel, about a man who inherits the titular hotel after Norman passes away. A young Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) appeared in this pilot, but due to terrible reviews, it wasn’t picked up for series. The concept was revived again with 2013’s Bates Motel, which reimagines the story of Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his relationship with mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). The show ran for five seasons in total, with season 5 acting as something of a remake of Psycho.

From the very beginning, fans of wondered how, or if, Bates Motel would attempt to recreate the shower scene. The show introduced its version of Marion Crane, played by Rihanna (Ocean’s 8), in episode 5 of the final season. Marion steals money to be with her boyfriend Sam Loomis but isn’t aware he’s married. Bates Motel season 5 episode 6 features Marion taking a shower and the show plays with inbuilt expectations, but just as it seems an offscreen killer is about to attack, Marion just steps out of the shower.

Rihanna’s Marion Crane eventually just leaves the hotel, which is one of the biggest twists of the entire series. While she confides in Norman after she learns the truth about Sam being married, he urges her to leave as he represses the urge to kill. Bates Motel season 5 episode 6 delivers another shock by having Norman instead kill Sam Loomis in the shower. Remaking such a famous sequence was always going to be difficult – like Psycho 1998 proved – but Bates Motel season 5 episode 6 offered a great twist on it. It subverted expectations while staying true to the story the show had been telling.
