Scarlett Johansson’s solo Black Widow movie takes place before Avengers: Infinity War, which could allow the film to set up her joining the Secret Avengers. When Marvel Cinematic Universe fans saw Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, they got to meet a group unofficially known as the Secret Avengers. Led by Captain America, the Secret Avengers included Black Widow, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch. All of them were fugitives due to breaking the Sokovia Accords and not striking plea deals as Hawkeye and Ant-Man did.

The Secret Avengers didn’t stay hidden for too long in Avengers: Infinity War, and both Black Widow and Captain America were fully re-integrated into the Avengers after Thanos’ snap. This let down some fans who wished to see more of an underground Avengers team. It also left some with questions about how the team came to be. Captain America broke Falcon and Scarlet Witch out of The Raft at the end of Captain America: Civil War, so their pairings make sense. However, Black Widow was on the run by herself at this time, but Black Widow could set up her joining the Secret Avengers.

Black Widow is set in the past of the current MCU story, due in part because Natasha died in Avengers: Endgame. Her solo adventure, though, will explore what she was up to between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. This setting firmly makes Black Widow a target of Secretary Thunderbolt Ross, which is why he is featured in the movie. He is hunting down Natasha for breaking the Sokovia Accords, which will result in her reunion with her Russian family: Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, and Iron Maiden. After being pursued by Ross, seeing her old family, and presumably defeating demons of her past, that could be what pushes Black Widow into the company of the Secret Avengers. This would then allow Black Widow to serve as a great lead-in to Avengers: Infinity War.

How Natasha meets up with the Secret Avengers isn’t a necessary story that the MCU needs to tell, but it would work quite nicely with Black Widow. The movie is expected to explore Natasha as she searches for her place in the world. Seeing her “family” will likely play a big part in this, especially since they didn’t end on good terms the last time they were together. But we also know that Black Widow feels most at home with the Avengers. She said in Avengers: Endgame that she didn’t have anything before them and referred to the team as her family. After spending some time away from her fellow heroes and confronting her past, a reunion with Captain America and the other Secret Avengers could be a fitting conclusion.

If Black Widow does have some direct setup for Natasha joining the Secret Avengers, it will be interesting to see how Marvel pulls this off. It could be as simple as Black Widow getting in contact with them and heading off to meet the team at the end. But, it would also be a nice surprise for most viewers if Black Widow included a cameo by one of them. This probably won’t be where Chris Evans returns as Captain America, but a small appearance by Anthony Mackie’s Falcon could work.
