How Can Call of Duty Modern Warfare Fix Spawns

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the most popular Call of Duty game of the current console generation, yet despite this massive success, fans are not shy about criticizing the game. From weapon balancing to map design and skill-based matchmaking, CoD fans have been extremely vocal in their intense distaste for certain flaws in the game.

One such flaw is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s spawn systems. The way that the game places users into the map mid-match is full of issues and exploits, and players have recently become increasingly insistent that something be done about it.

While problematic spawns have been present since Modern Warfare’s beta, other issues like weapon balancing, maps, and camping have up until now been the primary focus of fans’ ire. However, as these issues have slowly but surely been patched and balanced, spawns have become a much more prevalent topic of complaint and debate.

What are Players Upset About?

There are several issues stemming from the spawn system that have continued to rankle players in Modern Warfare, as they frequently spawn directly in the line of sight of enemies. At its best, this gives the spawning player a very short time to react, even allowing them to find their foe off-guard. At its worst, this can cause an entire team of players to spawn over and over again in the same few spots, facing away from a player who can continue to mow them down.

In one 183 kill Modern Warfare match, not only does the losing team continually spawn right in front of a stationary juggernaut, they also typically spawn with their backs facing him, giving them absolutely no chance to react in time even if he was vulnerable.

These issues occur more frequently in the smaller, classic Modern Warfare maps that were remade for the contemporary Modern Warfare. The new spawn system seems especially incompatible with tiny maps that have more linear design and compact spaces. This is a big part of players’ frustration with the remade maps.

The perceived problems with spawns may just be inflated by the addition of a small map playlist. However, the issue is also inflated to a much more harmful proportion by the fact that it can be manipulated for an unfair advantage.Because the spawn system is predictable and does not account for enemy line of sight, players can purposefully rotate through spawn locations to easily pick off opponents as soon as they appear.

Even worse, a coordinated team of about three players can completely dominate a map by covering all available spawn points and endlessly killing their enemies before they can even move. Unfortunate souls caught in one of these “spawn traps” can be killed so many times in a row that it permanently tanks their stats.

Even if the spawns are not manipulated purposefully, an entire team can be forced to continually spawn in a single corridor with only one exit, watched by someone with an LMG and good cover. No matter what, being dropped into active combat the very instant one appears is extremely undesirable.

How the Spawns Work

The primary issues with the spawn system are all caused by the way that the game prioritizes player placement. While the developers have not released any official statement on how exactly the system decides where to place players, it is possible to glean information from the observations of community members and enough individual experience.

From what the community can observe, it seems that the game prioritizes placing a player near the most teammates. There are several designated spawn areas in each map, and a player who has just died will typically appear in the designated spawn location that is closest to another group of friendly players. A spawning player can also be placed in an open area near a friendly player that is not in combat, with the benefits of spawning near a teammate definitely being appreciated. It encourages players to move together in groups and work as a team, able to rely on their comrades for backup.

However, because spawning near a teammate takes precedence over spawning away from enemies, out of combat, or hidden from enemy view, many problems arise. As long as there are a few players present in a dangerous location at a time, an entire team can get caught in a cycle of spawning into a death trap. Players can even spawn right in front of an enemy who is already shooting at another teammate.

Occasionally, one team can occupy a preferable side of the map, ensuring that they continue to spawn there. This forces the other team to keep spawning in disadvantageous positions, even if it only results in their rapid demise.

How to Fix Spawns

There are several possible fixes for these issues. The most effective would simply be to change the game’s priorities for spawning players. If the game prioritized spawning players in the least busy part of the map, or the one with the least enemies, the game would likely feel entirely different. Likewise, if the game would not spawn anyone in a location currently being observed by an enemy, many issues would be solved instantly.

It is not necessarily so easy as that, however. Extremely small maps like Shipment will almost always be filled to the brim with players, making it constant chaos no matter what system is used. That is part of the charm of Shipment, and it is likely impossible to prevent terrible spawns on a map that small. The most effective change in this case would likely be to put obstacles in the corners that allow players to sit behind the backs of spawning enemies.

More radical options include adding a brief period of intangibility after a spawn, although this could also be easily abused. Likewise, allowing players to choose where they spawn in a similar manner to they system in Ground War might cause too many issues in tighter maps.

Ultimately, balancing the priorities of the spawn system towards keeping players out of combat would be ideal. Spawning right behind a teammate every time is not entirely necessary, and would likely be just as effective if it happened a little less frequently. Taking the proximity of enemies into account more frequently would do wonders for many players’ stress levels while playing.

Luckily, the Modern Warfare developers listen to the community and make frequent changes. As much as some people complain, the game is still fun and the spawns to not make it entirely unplayable. Many changes have been made to meet player requests, and a spawn system overhaul is by no means out of the question. Once spawns are dealt with, matchmaking will likely be next up on the chopping block.

According to the developers, the team is constantly working on spawns, while several updates have already tweaked the system to improve it. Progress may seem slow, but considering how long the game has been out, change has in fact been rapidly fixing all of the numerous issues with the game. Let upset players not forget the many weapon nerfs and fan-requested addition of smaller maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
