How Coulsons Final Agents Of SHIELD Scene Referenced The Series Premiere

Coulson’s final scene in the series finale of Agents of SHIELD was actually a reference to the show’s series premiere. The scene in question wrapped up Coulson’s story and saw the return of Lola, his red 1962 Chevy Corvette and his most prized possession. This was one of several nods to past episodes that Agents of SHIELD has managed to pack into its final season. It was also Agents of SHIELD’s last reference.

The two-hour finale Agents of SHIELD did just as Enoch (Joel Stoffer) had teased and delivered the team’s final mission together. At the end of the episode, the team gathers together in a room (as holograms) one year after their victory over the Chronicoms. Once the meeting is over, the finale shows what each character is up to. After showing Daisy (Chloe Bennet) on an adventure in space with Sousa (Enver Gjokaj), the finale switches gears to the Coulson LMD, the last character to leave the meeting. Coulson is seen getting in what appears to be a fixed-up version of Lola, which has apparently been repaired for him by Mack (Henry Simmons). The episode ends with Coulson activating Lola’s flying mode and jetting off into the sky.

Coulson flying off with Lola was an interesting callback – and not just because it’s been years since the Corvette was a part of the show. How Agents of SHIELD left Coulson at the end of the series reflects how the show ended its pilot episode all the way back in 2013. Following the team’s first encounter with Daisy (who was still being called “Skye” at the time), Coulson suggested that she could become a part of SHIELD while the two were about to drive off in Lola. Daisy doubted he could impress her with anything SHIELD had, but Coulson proved her wrong when Ward (Brett Dalton) alerted them to a situation. An incredulous Daisy watched as Lola suddenly began to hover above the ground before taking off.

Both episodes ending with Lola disappearing over the horizon was a nice touch for the finale and a fitting way for the show to conclude its seven-season run. Lola made frequent appearances in the early seasons of Agents of SHIELD, with Coulson’s affection for the car often being used for humorous purposes. But over time, Lola slowly disappeared from the series, with her last appearance prior to the finale being in season 4’s Ghost Rider story.

As a basic transportation vehicle, Lola was still operational, but at this point in the series, its flight and hovercraft capabilities weren’t in use due to a rough landing in season 1. Coulson didn’t have it fixed, despite the fact that Mack was on-hand as their mechanic in season 2. That’s because he didn’t trust Mack enough to let him touch Lola, which he had always been extremely protective of. The fact that the LMD Coulson walked back that decision in season 7 shows how far their relationship has come.
