How Cyberpunk 2077s Analysis Mode Works (& What Its For)

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games of 2020, and as the game gets closer to release CD Projekt Red is sharing more details via a program called Night City Wire. The latest Night City Wire revealed a brand new gameplay segment and even announced a Netflix anime called Cyberpunk Edgerunners, made by Studio Trigger.

A wealth of details were shown off during the gameplay, like a brand new desert area outside of Night City, called the Badlands. One of the more interesting segments, however, saw a big shift in gameplay as the player used an Analysis Mode.

Analysis Mode splits from the usual action-packed fare, letting players take their time to investigate a scene. It was certainly a lot to take in, however, so here’s how analysis mode works in Cyberpunk 2077, and what it’s for.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Analysis Mode Explained

How Cyberpunk 2077s Analysis Mode Works (& What Its For)

Analysis Mode takes place during what’s called Braindance, letting players live through the recorded memory of another character. What’s really interesting, however, is that players aren’t actually controlling said character in the memory, but rather viewing it through a lens. Think of something like Batman’s Detective Vision, or Geralt’s Witcher Vision in The Witcher 3, but significantly blown up.

Players can use Braindance to see events from a first-person perspective, but then enter Analysis Mode to poke around the scene. The clip can be paused, sped-up, or rewound at will, and tons of details can be scanned to find out even more information. Players can even scan the environment for different conversations and background noise. There are two scan layers, Visual and Audio, each of which let players investigate different aspects of the environment. In the gameplay shown, the player uses a security camera and a monitor to figure out who shot the robber in the clip. The sequence was very guided, but it also seemed like the in-game tutorial for Briandance, which means the feature could open up significantly later on. It’s possible that later Braindance sequences could be more freeform and interactive, requiring some serious detective work on the player’s part.

When Analysis Mode Is Used

In the Cyberpunk universe, Braindance is primarily used for entertainment, as it allows users to escape into someone else’s life. It’s basically the new form of interactive entertainment, but also serves a purpose in treating Cyberpsychosis, a mental illness caused by an overload of cybernetic augmentations, according to Cyberpunk 2077’s wiki. In-game, of course, Braindance will serve as a way to flesh out the main story and world, even learning bits of lore along the way. Braindance will most likely be used at key moments in the story to uncover where to go next or what lead to chase. Much like Geralt’s Witcher Vision, Braindance will be necessary to uncover the truth in Cyberpunk 2077.
