How Cyclops Became Captain America After Losing His Powers

In the not-too-distant future of the alternate timeline of the Ultimate Marvel Universe, there is a version of Cyclops who has taken up the mantle of Captain America, sort of. The Ultimate versions of the Fantastic Four and X-Men are virtually the same as their Earth-616 counterparts, with the respective Ultimate teams given more modern origin stories. Once Reed Richards finds a target on his back, futuristic versions of these heroes take him to their potential future, where fans meet Cyclops’ version of Captain America.

In Ultimate Fantastic Four/Ultimate X-Men Annual #1 written by Aron E. Coleite and Joe Pokaski with art by Brandon Peterson and Eric Ngvyen, a future version of the Fantastic Four working with the remnants of the X-Men kidnap Reed Richards from the past. Their plan is to kill Mr. Fantastic for his supposed crimes against the future. The futuristic hit-squad includes Sue Storm, Franklin Richards possessed by the Phoenix Force, and Cyclops, now going by Captain X-Merica.

Twenty years after the events of the then current Ultimate Universe, there is a version of Scott Summers who had his powers stripped away and took up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers tragically died. These tragedies are the fault of Reed Richards, who was working on a way to transform the Thing back into a human. The experiment goes awry and blasts a number of other heroes. The cure-method strips Sue Storm, Scott Summers, and Steve Rogers of their powers, turning Scott from a mutant into a normal human, returning Sue to her original form, and de-powering Steve, which makes the ex-super soldier age rapidly and die.

In the moment Rogers dies and others are simply de-powered, Scott Summers becomes the new Captain America, sporting ‘X’s on his suit rather than the famous star. To try to undo what Reed Richards has done, the team that has become unwilling subjects of his experiments go on a mission to kill him. However, once they have him they realize Reed Richards can’t be killed. When the Phoenix tries to obliterate the hero, he notes that Reed’s molecular structure cannot be destroyed. Eventually the team from the past saves Reed, though while that version of Mr. Fantastic is saved, another version is still responsible for killing Steve Rogers and creating Captain X-Merica.

The jump from leader of the X-Men to taking up the mantle of the leader of the Avengers isn’t a far one for Scott Summers to make. Even with his powers as Cyclops, Summers has for the most part exhibited similar personality traits as Captain America. While the method by which he becomes an alternate version of Cap is tragic, it is in some ways a natural progression for the character, growing him from a mainstay on the X-Men to a major player in the wider Marvel Universe while retaining the main traits that make Cyclops such a great leader. Cyclops’ stint as Captain America is a short one, and while his character plays more of a villainous role in this story, Cyclops would undoubtedly make a great Captain America if he were ever asked to pick up the shield in a more heroic capacity. Unfortunately, the version fans got was a much darker Captain America after Reed Richards stripped Cyclops of his mutant abilities.
