How Dan Houser & Lazlows Departure Will Change GTA 6

Last year brought about major changes for Rockstar with the departures of studio co-founder Dan Houser and longtime writer and beloved radio host “Lazlow” Jones, and the ripple effect will surely be felt in the eventual release of Grand Theft Auto VI. There has been no shortage of speculation regarding both individuals exit, but regardless of the reason the writing and creative styling of the studio may see significant changes.

Houser’s absence will certainly have the largest impact. Having co-founded the studio with his brother Sam Houser back in 1998, Dan was a driving force in the studio’s narrative focus, even serving as lead writer on titles such as Max Payne 3, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption. Though not as centrally influential within the studio, Lazlo Jones was a prominent writer for Rockstar as well as being heavily involved with the music and audio, and of course providing the voice for the character “Lazlow” who hosted Chatterbox FM. Both individuals’ absence will surely be felt.

Dan Houser’s decision to leave comes on the heels of a long leave of absence that began shortly after Red Dead Redemption 2 released, and many have speculated Houser was becoming disinterested as the studio was shifting more into an online multiplayer focus and focusing less on single-player narratives. He had even stated prior to his leave that he was unsure of how to approach the next GTA given the changes in society. The fact that Dan’s primary focus was on the single-player sotry, and the fact that Rockstar has stated they have no plans for single-player DLC for either GTA V or RDR2, lends credence to the rumors that his exit was due to the studios growing online strategy.

What These Departures Mean For GTA 6

Lazlo’s departure may not be a reflection of the studio’s changes, as it’s been discovered via social media that he is helping care for a family member battling cancer, but him leaving could still affect the franchise significantly. As someone who played a key role in the music selection along with the radio stations’ personalities, wherever the GTA franchise goes next musically will feel different without his influence and brand of humor. Of course this also means that the radio-turned-TV host “Lazlow” played by Jones will be missing from the next installment.

While the loss of two prominent writers, one being the vice president of creativity, by no means spells the demise of a studio, it does point towards massive changes in the quality and nature of the narrative and world design. This, along with Rockstar’s continued push into the online components and decreased focus on single-player narratives, likely means solo adventures will be fewer and farther between. Though there are a number of broader implications for the studio as a whole, the direct effect on GTA 6 will be impactful as that is almost certainly Rockstar’s next big release.

Given the timing of both departures it’s probable that fans have to wait even longer for the next single-player outing from Rockstar, and while there have been a number of leaks and rumors hinting at a Vice City setting no concrete timeline has been announced by Rockstar. With GTA V preparing for another launch on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X this summer and Red Dead Online now available as a standalone, the studio has plenty to keep themselves, and fans, busy in the meantime.

This could very potentially mean though that Rockstar’s future single-player experiences, specifically GTA 6, are smaller both in scope and style. It’s very possible that any future solo installments see streamlined experiences with tighter narratives as the studio works its biggest expansions into the online worlds. Grand Theft Auto, though may be facing its first competition in some time, and Rockstar certainly doesn’t want to lose their place at the top, so it stands to reason 2021 could see lots of new developments from the storied developer.
