How DCs New 52 Superman Died

Superman has famously kicked the bucket on numerous occasions across various mediums, but while not as famous as the passing featured in other stories, the death of the New 52 version of his character is one of the more dramatic and satisfying ends for Clarke Kent. Spanning five years, the New 52 is one of many reboots to have taken place in DC continuity. It featured younger, and often edgier, takes on the heroes of the DCU, Superman chief among them.

The Superman of the New 52 was a markedly different character than the Post-Crisis version readers had grown to love beforehand. He was a little brasher, a little angrier, and altogether a bit rougher around the edges than the man that came before. Legendary writer Grant Morrison initially introduced New 52 Supes as someone much more akin to the working class hero who first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. He never even dated Lois Lane, as New 52 Superman’s chief love interest was Wonder Woman.

While he might have been a vastly different character than the Superman people knew and loved, the Clark Kent of the New 52 was still a hero, and he went out like one too. Over the course of several years, New 52 Superman had been exposed to everything from a vault of Kryptonite to the hell pits of Apokolips and it took heavy tole; his body was slowly breaking down from exposure to such drastic elements. In Peter Tomasi, Mikel Janín, and Doug Mahnke’s The Final Days of Superman storyline, the character has his final goodbye and final battle. After a violent man named Denny Swan is struck by a bolt of lightning carrying Superman’s genome, he is left with increasingly unstable solar powers and the delusion that he is Superman. This leads him into conflict with the genuine article and his allies. With the help of the returned Post-Crisis Superman, New 52 Superman managed to fly Swan above the earth and defeat him with a solar charge just before the madman’s body went up in an explosion of power. Ailing from the final stages of Kryptonite poisoning and his struggle with Swan, Superman bids his loved ones farewell before an explosion of green energy turns his body to ash and stone.

How DCs New 52 Superman Died

It wasn’t the first or most dramatic time a Superman has died, and it probably won’t be the last either. Death is practically a tradition for Clark Kent. From the alternate universe Golden Age Superman of Earth-2 dying after a brutal fistfight with Superboy-Prime in Infinite Crisis, to the iconic The Death of Superman showdown with Doomsday that was aped in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The fact of the matter is, Superman has died several other times before, in fairly bizarre circumstances.

The passing of Superman’s New 52 counterpart differs from the others in several ways. It wasn’t made for shock value or to launch a media frenzy like The Death of Superman before it. The Final Days of Superman, if anything, rests as a coda of sorts for the New 52 era. DC’s Rebirth was coming, and among many changes, it was bringing back the beloved Post-Crisis Superman thought to have been erased by Flashpoint. That Superman had been reintroduced along with Post-Crisis Lois Lane and their son, Jon. Like the flawed reboot that birthed him, the writing was on the wall for the New 52 Superman. His death marked a return of the old Man of Steel and DC’s entire line of comics, but this Superman still went out like a hero.
