How D&Ds Strixhaven Is Different From Hogwarts Or The Witchers Aretuza

With the release of Dungeons & Dragons’ Strixhaven A Curriculum Of Chaos players are transported to an adventure in a sprawling magic university, but it’s different from the more famous magical institutions seen in Harry Potter or The Witcher. The school is comprised of five colleges that each correspond with two colors. These colors are derived from the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This release marks the second crossover by Wizards of the Coast between D&D and MTG this year.

The idea of a magic school or mages academy in D&D is nothing new. The less enthused DM or player may think that it’s a Hogwarts knockoff or Aretuza, from The Witcher minus the eels. However, such an ill-informed comparison is like trying to compare real-world colleges and universities – it’s not so black and white. As schools in the real world can differ, so too can wizard schools.

The first, and easiest way to distinguish these three schools from one another is to look at how they were founded. The Witcher’s Aretuza was founded by one sorceress, Klara Larissa de Winter. Hogwarts was founded by two wizards and two witches, each of whom have a house in their name to cement their legacy, Gryffindor and Slytherin being the two most prominent. Strixhaven however, takes it to another level with five Founder Dragons being the founders and ultimate authority of the university.

How D&D’s Strixhaven Sets Itself Apart From Harry Potter

D&D’s Strixhaven absolutely dwarfs Hogwarts and Aretuza in a size comparison. Strixhaven sits on hundreds of acres and is home to six campuses. Each of the five colleges have a campus and the Central Campus that is host to the Biblioplex and Strixhaven Stadium. D&D: Strixhaven adds new spells, and the Biblioplex is said to be home to every spell that has ever existed in the multiverse. A place like the Biblioplex creates a great opportunity for a DM to introduce new spells or revisit old ones from D&D’s past, (like the Cleric’s Miracle wish spell). Strixhaven Stadium is where the game Mage Tower is played. The D&D adventure “The Hunt for Mage Tower” gives more information about the game.

The most interesting aspect of Strixhaven University may be the faculty and administration. All wizards and scholars of the Strixhaven faculty apply the use of magic to enhance all fields of study they teach. Students of history may be taught by wizards who use necromancy to have specific history lectures given by the dead. This could lead to some unique backstories for D&D wizards. As far as the administration, that is best described by a passage from the book itself.

“All these operations are managed by an administration overseen by the ten deans, two in each college. Each dean is an esteemed professor who embraces one side of their school’s philosophical dichotomy. The deans, like the professors who serve as counselors to students, view it as their role to disagree with each other and guide the college by way of their arguments. Furthermore, rivalries among the deans only exacerbate this combative attitude.”

How a DM applies the Strixhaven setting to their Dungeons & Dragons campaign is limitless. Whether followed directly as the principal setting or a side location in a homebrew campaign, it will be a welcome addition. Some of the characters function especially well NPCs for a DM to borrow. This Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons crossover looks like another win for Wizards of the Coast and players alike.
