How Does Natasha Escape General Ross At The End Of Black Widow

Warning! This post contains spoilers for Black Widow.

How Natasha Romanoff escapes from General Thaddeus Ross at the end of Black Widow is a mystery. The film is the first to kick off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as Black Widow’s first (and last) solo outing. Because it’s set prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War and during Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow sees the title character on the run from Ross, who was obsessed with hunting down the Avengers who avoided signing the Sokovia Accords.

Ross made two notable appearances in Black Widow. At the start of the film, he and his team managed to track down Natasha to a building, but she got the upper hand and escaped before she could be arrested. By this point in the film, Ross had captured Clint Barton, Sam Wilson, and Ant-Man. As a fugitive, Black Widow wasn’t doing a very good job of hiding her identity. Following the destruction of the Red Room and subsequent death of Dreykov, however, Natasha activated the tracker so Ross could find her as the rest of her family — Yelena, Melina, and Alexei — escaped with the other widows in tow. While Natasha is apprehended by Ross, she escapes somehow and, two weeks later, goes to break out her friends from the Raft, a prison created for superhumans.

The big mystery of Black Widow is exactly how Natasha managed to break out of Ross’ custody to begin with. Natasha certainly had the opportunity to run in the midst of the chaos of the Red Room’s destruction, but she needed time for her family to leave unscathed and unnoticed. The audience never did see Ross apprehend her, only that he was about to. It’s also possible Black Widow was arrested and broke out during the drive away. It would explain how she managed to flee so quickly and return to Mason. However, it’s more likely she allowed Ross to take her to wherever he planned to before going into full escape mode. Perhaps Ross detained her for a while in Europe before he planned to send her back to the U.S.

Black Widow Forgets To Answer How She Escaped General Ross

Black Widow’s escape is a moment entirely glossed over in the film as the audience is meant to assume she evaded Ross in the same way she did at the beginning, but the film forgets to explain her actions and it results in a plothole. Whatever the case, Black Widow was able to get away from Ross before he flew her out to the Raft. They were in Europe and the trip would have taken a few hours. It’s possible Yelena went after her later, assisting Natasha in escaping from the clutches of Ross before they parted ways once more. Black Widow’s family was very aware she was a global fugitive and it’s doubtful they would leave her behind with Ross after what they went through together in the film.

Natasha is incredibly resourceful and if she was able to escape Ross the first time, then it stands to reason she would be able to do it for a second time. What’s frustrating is why the moment was included in Black Widow at all if there wasn’t going to be any resolution to how she broke free of the general’s custody. There are also questions surrounding Natasha continuing to show her face despite being a wanted figure. In the end, one can only speculate about how Natasha fled Ross at the end of Black Widow because the film doesn’t provide any answers, so the possibilities regarding her breakout are endless.
