How Dunes Baron Is Connected To House Atreides & What It Means For Part 2

While he has minimal screen time in 2021’s Dune, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) has a connection to House Atreides that has yet to be explored. Dune is an adaptation of the first book in Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi series and is the first part of a two-part epic, which means the film leaves a lot of characters and plotlines hanging with little to no resolution. With the film recently being released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, everyone wants to know what’s next to come in this thrilling saga.

One of the aforementioned characters left with little resolution or development is the film’s antagonist, Baron Harkonnen. While the Baron may just seem like a bad guy for the sake of having a villain, he actually plays an integral role in the overall story of Herbert’s original works. The Baron’s connection to the characters of Paul and Lady Jessica, in particular, is an enormous plot point in the first Dune novel, and will surely have a large affect on the Dune Part 2 when it arrives.

In Frank Herbert’s novel, it is revealed that the Baron is the illegitimate father of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) as a result of the Bene Gesserit breeding program, and thus the grandfather of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) and his newborn sister, Alia, who has yet to be introduced in the films. This changes up the whole dynamite of the conflict between House Harkonnen and House Atreides, as there is now a familial tie that gives more weight to the inevitable confrontation between the two. This reveal will be a big deal and will further mature the overall narrative in Dune: Part Two.

As for what this development means for the sequel, the Baron himself will probably have a lot more focus and be built up more than he previously was in Dune. And with the introduction of Paul’s younger sister, Alia, there will be a lot of layers to the second half of this adaptation. It will be less of a simple good-versus-evil story, and rather a more personal standoff between family members, with the Baron, Paul, Jessica, and Alia all remaining in the mix, in addition to the Baron’s horrific older nephew, the “Mudir Nahya” Glossu Rabban Harkonnen (Dave Bautista).

This reveal will affect Lady Jessica especially, as she was unaware of her origin. She may start questioning the Bene Gesserit way as she does in the novel, seeing as they have kept this secret from her, presumably to not mess with the breeding program and the delicate balance of power in the empire. This may also alter her perspective of the Kwisatz Haderach, as she fears how Paul’s relation to the Baron will affect him in the long term, as well as her daughter. There are a lot of cogs that will turn between these characters that will surely give fans of both the books and the first Dune film the epic conclusion this story deserves.
