How Eternals Changed Gilgameshs Movie Character To Suit Don Lee

Don Lee explains how Eternals altered Gilgamesh’s character so that he could play him for the Marvel film. Eternals was originally slated to debut in theaters in 2020, but it was pushed back an entire year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It rolled out in early November and quickly became one of the most unique MCU releases yet. For one thing, its style and story were unlike any other Marvel movie that had come before it. For another, Eternals earned mixed reviews from fans and critics, notching the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of the entire MCU.

Directed by Oscar winner ChloƩ Zhao, Eternals had the difficult task of introducing 10 different characters to the MCU and making them stand out. From reluctant team leader Sersi (Gemma Chan) to vain Bollywood star Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), the movie is packed with unique personalities. It also features an incredible amount of talent. Popular South Korean actor Lee, best known for his role in Train to Busan, plays Gilgamesh, the strongest Eternal with a gentle nature. His bond with Thena (Angelina Jolie) serves as one of the emotional backbones of Eternals.

In bringing the Eternals to the big screen, the movie made some adjustments to the source material. As Lee explained in a recent interview with Rolling Stone Korea, Gilgamesh’s race and fighting style were both altered so he could play him. This amazed Lee, who knew almost immediately he would be perfect for the part. He said:

“Once I read for the character of Gilgamesh, I knew that it was perfect for me. Director Chloe Zhao and Marvel molded the character to fit me. In fact, Gilgamesh isn’t even an Asian character. They changed the character to suit me. They knew that I had boxed for a long time, so they changed the action to hand-to-hand combat. I was really touched that they were so considerate and made the character to fit me.”

Gilgamesh wasn’t the only Eternals character who underwent some changes in the transition to the big screen. For example, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) became a deaf Black woman instead of a white man. Because of these alterations, Eternals is by far the most diverse MCU project yet. It held a lot of firsts for the franchise beyond its shaky Rotten Tomatoes score, and that’s not something that should be discounted. Zhao prioritized character with this one, and it shows in both the movie itself and the cast that was chosen to bring it to life. Lee really did become the perfect Gilgamesh, and that he was allowed to play him at all is a monumental thing.

Though Marvel has yet to confirm any kind of follow-up, the Eternals ending suggested there is much ahead for these characters. One can assume they will eventually cross over with other figures in the MCU, though right now, it’s anyone’s guess as to how they will. Since Eternals had to spend so much time establishing each person, future installments can dig deeper into their characters than ever before. Let’s hope Marvel moves quickly on finding a new place for the Eternals in its ever-growing universe.
