How Eternals Kingo Compares To Tony Stark

Eternals producer Nate Moore explains how Kumail Najiani’s Kingo compares to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. Downey played the self-described genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist since Marvel Studios’ premiere film Iron Man in 2008. Long before becoming a founding member of the Avengers in the 2012 team-up movie, the brash, charismatic superhero was at the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Avengers: Endgame, it was only fitting that Iron Man be the one to save the universe he helped create.

With Tony and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gone, the Avengers have seemingly disassembled in Phase 4. The MCU is set to introduce a new group of immortal heroes in its 26th film, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals. The film follows its titular cosmic race who were created by the Celestials and sent to Earth thousands of years ago. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere in any human conflicts unless their evil counterparts, the Deviants, are involved. That being said, Hulk’s snap in Endgame has caused a cataclysmic event that releases a new horde of Deviants. Eternals stars Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dong-seok Ma, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Kumail Nanjiani.

During Screen Rant’s visit to the Eternals set, producer Nate Moore explained that one of the Eternals might vaguely call back to one of the first Avengers. Moore compared the personality of Nanijiani’s Kingo to that of the late Tony Stark. Read what he had to say below:

“There’s definitely some Tony Stark vibes. I don’t think Kingo is as suave as Tony is. Even on his best day I think he is a little bit more goofy but he’s also hysterical.”

Nanjiani is perhaps best known for his roles in Silicon Valley and The Big Sick (2017). In preparation for Eternals, the actor underwent a now-viral body transformation, bulking up to play Kingo. As is the case with many of the big-screen Eternals, this new version of Kingo deviates from the Japanese one in the comics. Nanjiani’s Kingo seemingly begins his journey on Earth in Pakistan and ultimately becomes a beloved Bollywood movie star. Not unlike Iron Man, Kingo uses his cosmic powers to shoot beams from his hands.

Nanjiani’s comedic timing/ability has, more often than not, been utilized in a self-deprecating way on screen. He’s jokingly described his character in Eternals as “a better version of [him]”. It’s not hard to imagine Downey saying the same thing about his character. Suffice to say that the full extent of Nanjiani’s confidence and charisma will be on display in the film as he plays an MCU celebrity. While there will never be another Tony Stark, fans will certainly enjoy seeing residual “genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist” traits.
