How Godzilla vs Kong Is Avoiding The Original Movies Biggest Mistake

Details regarding Godzilla vs. Kong indicate that the movie will be avoiding the original crossover’s biggest mistake, which was how it ended the fight between the two pop culture icons. The 1962 Toho film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, saw the two titular monsters battle it out; their collision concluded with both falling into the ocean. Only one of the two, Kong, emerged from the water.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the fourth installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse will serve as the second big screen matchup between Godzilla and King Kong. Though the two are easily the biggest names in the giant monster movie genre, they haven’t met since King Kong vs. Godzilla. Attempts at remakes and sequels were made by Toho in the past, but never went very far. Now, a rematch is finally happening. On March 26, 2021, the long-awaited film will release in theaters and Warner Bros.’ streaming service, HBO Max. The movie is expected to involve Godzilla and Kong engaging in a “monster war”.

Based on comments from Adam Wingard in 2017, it’s become apparent that Godzilla vs. Kong won’t be repeating a key mistake made in their first fight. Wingard has said that audiences will be able to walk out of the theater feeling that there was a “winner”. In other words, Godzilla vs. Kong won’t simply end in a tie or leave the outcome unclear. Wingard acknowledged that the original didn’t take a “definitive stance”, and that they plan to do things differently with the MonsterVerse version.

Because of the direction that was taken with King Kong vs. Godzilla’s ending, fans of both monsters have been divided to this day on what really happened. Instead of choosing a victor in the movie itself, Toho labeled Kong the victor in a synopsis. As for why Godzilla fans argue against Kong’s victory, it’s been said that Godzilla could have swum away instead of surfacing like Kong did. Admittedly, this idea does make sense. Godzilla was seen living at the bottom of the ocean at the beginning of the film, so it seems reasonable that when they went their separate ways, Godzilla simply headed home.

Part of the point of a movie like this is to show who would win. It’s always disappointing when films similar in premise to Godzilla vs. Kong fail to adequately answer this question. The long-running debate about King Kong vs. Godzilla demonstrates how important it is that the MonsterVerse ensure the same scenario isn’t recreated in the new movie. While the presence of Mechagodzilla does suggest that their fight will lead to a team-up of some kind, that doesn’t mean one Titan can’t beat the other. It could be that Godzilla will beat Kong (or vice-versa), and then have to hold off Mechagodzilla until the loser recovers. Either way, the title of King of the Monsters is at stake, and only one monster will be able to lay claim to it after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong.
