How Hannibal Season 3 Episode 3 Improved On Hannibal Risings Origin Story

Here’s how Hannibal season 3 episode 3 “Secondo” presented a much better take on the character’s backstory than prequel Hannibal Rising. The Hannibal Lecter movie franchise was pretty much cooked by the time the series debuted on NBC in 2013. Anthony Hopkins had ruled out ever returning to the part while 2007’s Hannibal Rising, which cast Gaspard Ulliel as a younger version of the infamous cannibal, underperformed critically and financially.

The Hannibal TV series wiped the slate clean and focused on the relationship between profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal before the events of Red Dragon. The show’s unique style, great characters and shocking – though surprisingly artful – lashings of gore saw it receive some critical raves. Sadly, despite having a devoted fanbase it was canceled after season 3 thanks to low ratings.

Hope springs eternal that one day Hannibal season 4 will be greenlit and will pick up from the show’s literal cliffhanger finale. The first half of Hannibal season 3 served as a reimaging of the novel of the same name, which found the title character hiding out in Florence while Will and Jack (Laurence Fishburne) track him down. This section also sprinkled in elements from Hannibal Rising, but whereas that novel and its movie adaptation spelled out the character’s history and why he became a monster, season 3 took a much better approach.

Hannibal season 3 episode 3 “Secondo” features a trio of storylines, including Jack arriving in Florence – finally confirming his survival following season 2’s bloody finale – while Hannibal and Bedelia explore the former’s feelings about Will “forgiving” him his misdeeds. The main story has Will arrive at Hannibal’s seemingly abandoned childhood home in Lithuania, but when he explores the Lecter Estate he encounters Chiyoh (Tao Okamoto), the maid of Hannibal’s aunt Lady Murasaki. She’s also keeping an unnamed prisoner in a cage, as Hannibal told Chiyoh this man ate his sister Mischa.

In Hannibal Rising, the cliff notes version of Hannibal’s origin is that during World War 2 he and his young sister Mischa hid from Nazis in a lodge. They were later kidnapped by deserters, who due to starvation decided to kill and eat Mischa, and years later an adult Hannibal hunts them down one by one; he also feels deep shame for eating from the same broth to stay alive. Part of the character’s appeal was his mystique, so bluntly spelling out Hannibal’s backstory was a huge mistake, which is partly why the book and movie were poorly received by fans.

Hannibal season 3 episode 3 reuses elements of Hannibal Rising, but exact details are left vague. It only scratches the surface, with the episode revealing Hannibal – for unexplained reasons – ate his own sister to “forgive” her, as he seemingly couldn’t reconcile his feelings of love. The show doesn’t explain what happened to Hannibal’s parents or his aunt, or who the man in the cage really is. The show’s creator Bryan Fuller has admitted to not particularly liking the Hannibal Rising novel, and wisely opted to restore the sense of mystery about his origin.

Hannibal season 3 episode 3 also sees Hannibal state that nothing happened at his childhood home, only that “I happened,” which is the only backstory he needs. Intriguingly, Fuller once planned to feature both Lady Murasaki and Hannibal’s Uncle Robert on the show, with the latter character being lined up for David Bowie, who passed due to ill health.
