How Hawkeye Sets Up Maya’s Disney Spinoff Echo

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Hawkeye, streaming now on Disney+.

Unlike the other Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe shows that were released in 2021, Hawkeye has some of the lowest stakes. But just because the multiverse isn’t in jeopardy doesn’t mean the story is devoid of heart or consequences. Part of what gives the show so much heart are the characters found within. Other characters shine brightly aside from Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop’s (Hailee Steinfeld) growing friendship. One example is a new addition named Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox). With a spin-off series based on the character announced, here’s how Hawkeye help set the character up for her own journey.

Hawkeye introduced Echo as the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia. Deaf and using a prosthetic leg, she proved herself capable of working with everyone else by applying herself in education and hand-to-hand combat. As a result, she is both knowledgeable and skilled in fighting. When she was young, her father pushed her to be the best she could be, but when Ronin killed him, she swore revenge.

Before her spin-off could begin, Lopez seemingly got her revenge by shooting her father’s real killer, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), point-blank in the head. However, when a similar situation in the comics happened, Fisk survived but was temporarily blinded. Therefore, he could recover in time for the Echo series and become the main antagonist. If true, he could put all of his resources into hunting down Maya Lopez.

Part of what makes the Kingpin so intimidating is the value he places on public image. To be humiliated and shown as weak by Lopez means he has to respond with even greater force to appear untouchable. Although he could attack her head-on, he could also hire skilled assassins to take her down. However, there’s also a personal story ready to be explored that was teased in the Hawkeye finale.

Before she killed her childhood friend and confidant, Kazi (Fra Fee), he expressed how he couldn’t run away with her because the Tracksuits were his life. He never had the chance to walk between both worlds like her. That guilt could be explored in flashbacks and show why Maya is different, from being favored by Fisk to never wearing the titular tracksuit. Kazi could also be talking about the education she got that allows her a better chance at success than he could ever get. Or, in a more far-fetched idea, he could be talking about an even greater talent Maya possesses that he never could, like her photographic reflexes that she can use to do anything, anywhere.

Before Echo premieres, it’s clear that the MCU is slowly setting up a potential threat with Fisk. However, it’s also setting up an internal conflict where Lopez now can live a free life but faces incredible guilt for having to kill her former family. There are many exciting plot threads to explore, but it’s clear this is only the beginning for Maya Lopez.

To see Echo’s journey begin, Season 1 of Hawkeye is now streaming on Disney+.
