There’s no questioning that Lily is an interesting character. But she did some pretty questionable things.

It was established fairly early on during How I Met Your Mother’s run that Marshall and Lily were the heart and soul of the show. Yes, the series is mostly about Ted’s never-ending quest to be with Robin Scherbatsky despite eventually meeting the woman of his dreams. But Lily and Marshall also had plenty of moments of their own.
Over by the course of the show though, Lily had moments that were just plain terrible. Here are 10 things about Lily that would never fly today.
10 Meddled In Ted’s Relationships
During Ted’s umpteenth reconciliation with Karen, a girl that Marshall and Lily were none too fond of, it was revealed that Lily had conspired to break them up. Karen wasn’t the first and she certainly wasn’t the last either. Lily even inadvertently got Ted and Robin to think about their futures and that conversation caused their breakup as well.
9 Left Marshall For California
Getting cold feet before getting married is a perfectly natural feeling. But Lily was ready to call off the entire wedding and life she could have with Marshall to try her hand at being an artist in San Francisco.
While some might find that decision noble, it’s a decision that probably should have been made before saying yes to the dress and breaking Marshall’s heart.
8 Fights Marshall Over Their Dreams
While working for The Captain, Lily got the opportunity to work in Italy for a year. Several days before she and Marshall were supposed to leave, he got his own career dream offer to be a judge. While Marshall should have told her instead of waiting to do it in person, she was acting like a petulant child instead of hearing Marshall out. She put her foot down and kept saying “Italy.” She forced Marshall to give up his career aspirations for one year without a shred of gratitude.
7 She Constantly Let Barney Off The Hook
This is really more for the entire group, but Barney is quintessentially the worst person ever and completely irredeemable, but everyone, especially Lily lets him off the hook for his philandering ways, all of the time. She even helps Barney track down the ex who was sabotaging his dating life. She might also seem to be a little grossed out by the Barnacle, but she doesn’t mind celebrating many of his floozy conquests either.
6 Nearly Got Ted Fired
Lily’s an ingrate too. She bolted her job, friends, and fiancé for San Francisco, came back, and just expected everyone in her circle to forgive her and help her back on her feet.
5 Complete Shopaholic
Being a shopaholic isn’t bad. But raising you and your new hubby’s credit card debt to astronomical proportions just isn’t cool. She would even shop more to cheer herself up about her current predicament. In the real world, Lily could possibly go to jail and certainly, her and Marshall’s credit score could have been ruined for years. But instead, Marshall decided to set up a website to try and hawk some of the clothes she bought.
4 Leaves Her Students Alone
Speaking of being possibly arrested in the real world, kindergarten teacher Lily would certainly be fit for an orange jumpsuit if she let her students alone nearly as much as she did on the series. When Lily was getting sick from what she thought was food poisoning, she bolted out of her classroom and headed for home to stop Marshall from eating the same food and getting sick. As it turns out, she was preggers instead. But she still left her kids alone and unsupervised to head home.
3 Fought With Ted Over A Word
On the show, Ted called her a Grinch, and clearly didn’t use that word. He had his reasons – after all, she left Marshall, shattering his heart and headed to San Francisco. She left Ted too, to pick up the pieces. Whether Ted should have used such foul language is an entry for a Ted list, but Lily being so angry about it as to practically ruin Christmas by taking all of the ornaments to her sardine can-sized apartment is definitely fair game for this list.
2 Doesn’t Support Marshall
Marshall not only supports Lily at every single turn, but he also took her back after she did probably the worst thing you could do while engaged. He helps the family get out of debt and is willing to sacrifice his dream of being an environmental lawyer just to make more money and keep Lily happy in superficial gifts.
But when Marshall takes an internship at an Environmental firm, Lily can’t handle supporting her husband and nearly heads off to Spain instead.
