CBS’s How I Met Your Mother was a refreshingly new take on romantic sitcoms, telling the story backward from the future. It is adored by fans and critics alike for its excellent premise and hilarious writing including elements like running gags and flashforwards. Although many compare it to Friends, some say it’s “everything Friends tried to be, but better”.

Every sitcom needs to have a likable group of main characters, and HIMYM knocked it out of the park, with flawed yet likable leads. The Gang has had some truly special moments of friendship and love over the years, and so, here are 10 times the HIMYM Gang was BFF goals.

10 Ted Cheers Up Robin When She Finds Out She’s Infertile

In the season 7 episode, “The Symphony of Illumination”, Robin finds out she’s unable to have kids and feels heartbroken the entire episode since although kids were never a part of her plan, she did want that option to be open with the right guy someday.

Ted keeps asking her why she’s upset, but Robin is too hurt to talk about it, and keeps brushing him off. Ted, however, prepares a light and music show for her in the living room, saying that even though she can’t tell him, she can’t stop him from cheering her up either. It’s an especially sweet moment between them.

9 Barney Lets Lily Stay At His Place

When Lily moves back to New York, she has to live in a terrible apartment, with rats, no plumbing, and a broken bed. She goes to Barney and asks him if she can temporarily stay at his place, and he says yes, albeit begrudgingly.

And even though his motives were somewhat selfish after that, he did allow her to live there as long as she wanted to. At that point in the series, no one had even stepped in his apartment, and him letting someone stay there was quite sweet.

8 The Entire Gang Supporting Marshall When His Dad Dies

One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the series is when Marshall finds out his dad passed away from a heart attack. After he goes to Minnesota to be with his mom, the rest of the gang goes with him for the funeral and spends the entire day trying to cheer him up.

Ted and Barney try to make him laugh by trying to get him to watch videos of people getting hit in their crotch, Lily takes care of his mom and making sure she eats, and Robin, like a genie, produces anything Marshall might need, from her bag. It’s extremely heartwarming to see them support each other in tough times.

7 Ted Sells His Car To Help Out Marshall With Money

In “The Chain of Screaming”, Ted has purchased what he thought would be the envy of his friends, a car. However, the gang reminds him that he lives in New York, and tells him he won’t even use it. He seems to be quite attached to the car, not even letting them eat or smoke in it.

However, after Marshall gets fired, he gladly sells the car and gives the money to Marshall, so he can look for a job, pay rent, and support Lily. It’s great to see Ted spend the entire episode being so uptight about the car but be so willing to sell it as soon as his friend needs his help.

6 Barney Convinces Lily To Come Back To New York

After Barney ruins Marshall’s bachelor party by inviting a stripper who sprains her ankle, Marshall gets mad at him. He says Barney is a selfish person, and he’s considering not even inviting him to the wedding.

Lily, however, reveals that Barney had flown to her in San Fransisco when they were broken up, and convinced her to come back to New York to Marshall. Marshall seems moved and makes him the co-best man with Ted.

5 Marshall Takes Robin To Little Minnesota (and Then The Hoser Hut)

After Robin starts feeling homesick for Canada, Marshall takes her to a Minnesota-themed bar, The Walleye Saloon. However, she uses his personal story about his dad to win the friendship of a few local patrons there, and Marshall unmasks her as a Canadian.

However, he ultimately ends up taking her to the Hoser Hut, a Canadian-themed bar. She feels right at home and comfortable there, and she thanks Marshall for bringing her there.

4 Lily Helps Robin Find A New Best Friend When She Leaves For Italy

In the final season, Lily and Marshall have plans to move to Italy for a year, and they have decided to leave the day after the wedding. However, Lily feels like Robin should make another female friend, and she tries to get her to talk to another woman, even though Robin hates other women.

And even though she ends up shouting at a girl Robin makes a connection with it was still a sweet gesture, and the fact that they love each other so much that they feel madly jealous when they have to stay apart is extremely sweet.

3 The Gang Remembering Marshall’s BAR Account Password

In the season 3 episode, “Spoiler Alert”, while Marshall tries to remember the password to his BAR account, the gang keeps realizing some of the annoying habits they have, such as Ted telling Marshall how Lily is a loud chewer, and Lily telling Robin how most of what Ted says is correcting other people.

Robin tells the gang about how Marshall makes up annoying, catchy rhymes, and they all sing one of his rhymes, which Marshall immediately realizes is his password. It’s somewhat sweet to see how they know and remember so much about each other, even the parts they think are annoying.

2 Ted Teaches Barney How to Drive

In “Arrivederci, Fiero”, the gang is reminiscing about some of the memories they made in Marshall’s Fiero, as he tries to get it repaired. In one, Barney asks Ted to drive him somewhere, but when Ted says he’s busy and Barney says he’ll just take a cab, Ted realizes Barney doesn’t know how to drive.

He immediately offers to teach him, and even though he’s busy, takes him down and drives him to an empty parking lot and starts teaching him how to drive. It’s even more heartwarming once fans realize that Barney grew up without a dad, which is probably why he doesn’t know how to drive.

1 The Gang Being There For Each Other Decades Later

In the future, the gang goes through many ups and downs, such as Robin and Barney’s divorce, Robin being too engulfed in work to meet, and Marshall and Lily moving out of the Apartment. And even though their lives get busier and busier, they promise to be there for each other for the big stuff.

And they are. They all meet up for Ted’s wedding, and the birth of Barney’s daughter, and all the other big and important moments in their lives. It’s so heartwarming to see them all there for each other, even decades later, especially since they all know how easy it is to lose touch with friends.
