Robin was very clear about what her number one priority was in How I Met Your Mother, which led to both great and terrible love life decisions.

The emotionally distant Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother had an interesting love life, even though being in a relationship wasn’t a priority of hers. From enjoying one-night stands to dating two men in her friend group, she had been through it all. She was proposed to twice and had her heartbroken by men who didn’t deserve her in the first place.
Robin made both great and horrible decisions that affected her romantic relationships. She made the best decisions when she put herself first, while the worst were made when she prioritized her partners.
10 Best: Going On A Date With Ted
How I Met Your Mother started with Ted locking eyes with Robin across the bar. Things moved fast from there: Ted went from seeing her to saying ‘I love you’ in the span of the show’s pilot episode.
Robin soon realized that Ted and she aren’t compatible, but going out with him turned out to be a great decision nonetheless: she ended up with an awesome friend group.
9 Worst: Agreeing To See Simon Again
When Robin was the teenage superstar Robin Sparkles, she had her first boyfriend, Simon Tremblay. While she was absolutely crazy about him, he never really showed her much affection and respect in return. He broke her heart, and when he was visiting New York, Robin jumped at the opportunity to see him again.
This decision wouldn’t even be half as bad if Robin was indeed over Simon and would prove to him that she is doing much better than him, as she first intended. Unfortunately, Robin suffered from an extreme case of the so-called revertigo, and got hurt all over again.
8 Best: Getting Together With Barney
If there’s one good thing that came out of Robin’s heartbreak following seeing Simon again, it was that Barney and Robin spent the night together after watching the ‘Sandcastles in the Sand’ video. Afterward, it took them two more seasons to finally end up together.
Robin and Barney made a lot of sense as a couple. They had similar interests and they had a profound understanding of each other. After all, they both struggled with intimacy when dating other people, but not with each other.
7 Worst: Giving Away Her Dogs For Ted
One of the things that make no sense about Robin is the fact that she was willing to give up her dogs for Ted. She wasn’t the type of a person who’d put her romantic partner’s interests before hers. Above all else, she valued independence and freedom.
This love life decision turned out to be even worse after the two had broken up. Robin gave up the dogs, but only dated Ted for less than a year at that point.
6 Best: Having Fun With Gael
After Ted and Robin broke up, Robin decided to travel to Argentina. The decision turned out to affect her love life as well, as she brought a lover back to New York City with her: a spiritual young man, called Gael.
The two dated for a while, but once Robin got sick of Gael and his friends who were constantly at her place, she sent him packing. Gael was the perfect rebound guy: he lifted Robin’s spirits when she was down and left before they got too attached.
5 Worst: Dating Her Therapist
In season 7, Robin started dating her court-ordered therapist, Kevin. Not only is dating a therapist a little bit unprofessional, but it also creates an imbalance. While Kevin knew everything about Robin, she couldn’t say the same for him.
Not only was this a bad love life decision because he was her therapist, but these two also shared absolutely no chemistry. Robin cheated on him with Barney, but still accepted Kevin’s proposal. Ultimately, they broke up because Kevin wanted children and Robin didn’t.
4 Best: Living Her Best Single Life
The gang often slut-shamed Robin, but she didn’t let that get to her. Robin was at her best in regards to her love life when she had none, but chose to be single instead. While Ted was always looking for his future wife, Robin enjoyed having fun with no strings attached.
She dated a man much younger than her, Scooby, and gave a chance to the naked man. Additionally, she had a little bit of fun with Ted’s assistant PJ.
3 Worst: Prioritizing Don Over Her Career
Robin wasn’t the kind of a gal who’d drop anything for her boyfriend, but she completely abandoned herself while dating Don. Even though Don was one of the smartest men Robin ever dated, he turned out to be a bad match for her.
After all, he betrayed her when he took the job that Robin initially refused just to be with him. If she didn’t prioritize him over her career, she would’ve saved herself a lot of emotional pain.
2 Best: Marrying Barney
Robin and Barney didn’t live happily ever after once they started dating in season 5. They broke up for a while, but luckily, ended up getting married.
Their love story is one of Robin’s best character arcs, while their divorce made very little sense. Barney complained that Robin worked too much, while in reality, they both always appreciated how independent they were and how much space they gave each other.
1 Worst: Ending Up With Ted
The show’s finale divided fans into two groups: a minority who shipped Robin and Ted getting back together on one side and a majority who thought that ruined the entire show on the other.
Ted and Robin had tried to make it work countless times through the seasons but always came to the conclusion that they simply don’t have the same values. Agreeing to see Ted after everything Robin has been through with Barney felt unrealistic and incredibly forced.
