How I Met Your Mother Teds 5 Most Redeeming Qualities (& 5 Traits That Fans Hate)

In How I Met Your Mother, the latter half of the 2000s and early 2010s saw one of the most popular and successful sitcoms of all time rise to prominence in a post-Friends world, introducing its many fans to a slew of characters and storylines which are still binge-watched in today’s streaming-centric world to this day. Despite the show’s popularity, though, it is the main character of the show, Ted Mosby, whom fans have the most hatred for.

Ted does have some redeeming qualities, but overall he is despised by much of the HIMYM audience – akin to Ross Geller’s vilification in recent times – for his many intolerable traits.

10 Redeeming – Does Try To Be A Nice Guy

In all fairness to Ted, for the majority of the show, and in a lot of the events in his and the gang’s lives we see unfold, he tries to be a good guy, to be kind and fair, and to overall just do the right thing.

So often, Ted is just straight up nice; he is capable of being a genuine, sweet, likable guy. But he tends to ruin it with all of his irredeemable qualities that seep through over time, especially after the early days of the show.

9 Fans Hate – Never Learns Or Grows

That is a negative in itself; in season one, Ted is a nice guy, but the issue is he never changes. While characters like Barney and Robin, and then Marshall and Lily both as individuals and a couple grow, Ted never does.

Ted has by far the weakest character development in the show, and a lot of that is on him. He so rarely learns from events in his life. While he does take on board some things from his romantic past, he never moves past a lot of the toxic traits he displays and never really changes himself for the better, even into his older years.

8 Redeeming – Professional Passion

One of the most consistent aspects of each individual in the gang is their career hopes. While their actual job and the journey to finding their perfect environment changes, their ambitions all remain pretty intact, including Ted’s desire to be an architect.

Ted is obviously an incredibly talented architect and fulfills his dream of having a building on the New York skyline, but on top of that, he finds another perfect fit for his personality and skills, a professor, a job in which he thrives; his love for it all is great to see.

7 Fans Hate – Delusional

On the surface, Barney Stinson is by far a more despicable human than Ted, and that argument definitely has some merit, but a crucial piece of evidence to the contrary is the delusions of each.

Barney is self-aware; he knows he is a liar, has issues, that Bob Barker is not his father, and treats women like garbage. Ted, on the other hand, always believes he is doing right; he is so adamant about his status as a good guy, acting extremely egotistical and entitled on many occasions due to these delusions of his.

6 Redeeming – Romantic

The entire show rests on the shoulders of Ted Mosby’s search for love, a quest that begins in the first episode and undergoes many rocky roads, twists, and turns on the way to Tracy – and then back to Robin.

While Ted so often takes his romantic nature too far, when he does it right, the romantic side of Ted is one of his best attributes, and one cannot help but be glad when he is happy, and in love, for however long or brief it may be, and whatever he does to ruin it. His love of love can be infectious.

5 Fans Hate – Obsessiveness

His quest for love can also be intolerable, though. Ted is a guy who has a serious issue with obsession, latching onto people, things, and ideas like a leech who cannot let go, with Robin being the perfect example.

Despite how their relationship is never shown to be one that can work, and the two just in general are nowhere near as compatible as the two people they marry, Ted remains obsessed with Robin for most of the show and into his later years. He is also consumed by his seeking of love, and it eventually gets so painfully repetitive and infuriating to listen to.

4 Redeeming – Belief & Optimism

If there is any one trait that defines Ted as a character, sticking with him through all nine seasons of the show despite some bumps in the road, it is his belief in fate, love, and contagious optimism on the subject.

Even if Ted messes up a lot or becomes heartbroken, he so often perseveres and never truly gives up on true love, eventually finding it in Tracy – or rather Robin in the end – and earning the life he always believed he could have.

3 Fans Hate – Pretentious

If there is anything about Ted that gets on the nerve of all of his friends and the fans of the show, it is his unbelievable pretentiousness, coupled with a deluded ego, as talked about earlier.

Ted so often thinks he is better than, and more refined than his friends, with a better taste and palette, and that he should be of a higher class of person, often rubbing his friend’s faces in his knowledge through his plethora of corrections and snobbish attitude.

2 Redeeming – Love For His Friends

Sticking with common qualities, every member of the gang shares the lovable feature of adoring their friends and treating them like their true family; Ted is no exception.

Even if there are disagreements and small falling out in the gang, they adore one another, and these things are natural. Ted can always count on them and vice versa; they are a tight-knit unit, and it is always a happy sight to see how much Ted loves them all.

1 Fans Hate – Treatment Of Women

So often, and rightfully so, Barney’s insane womanizing is shown as his defining trait, and he is shown to be the absolute worst to women throughout the show. However, while Barney is heinous, Ted also treats women like garbage a lot of the time.

He idolizes the idea of some women, putting them on a pedestal they could never possibly reach, often acting like that is their fault; his obsessive nature does not help this. There are many, many examples of him just being a total and complete jerk to his girlfriends and women in general, from dumping women on their birthday, making Robin get rid of her dogs, and cheating on those he claims to love.
