None of the lead characters in How I Met Your Mother are particularly great people, but if they were to be ranked from best to worst, Marshall would arguably be the best and Barney would indisputably be the worst. From treating women like objects to being an outright sociopath, Barney Stinson is a pretty deplorable guy.

There are good qualities in Barney, too, and he was known to occasionally do noble things, so he wasn’t all bad, but he was mostly bad.

10 Best: Making A Video Résumé For Robin

When Robin was facing deportation due to her unemployment, Barney was determined to get her a job. So, he showed her his video résumé and offered to make her a video résumé of her own.

She didn’t think it would work, but Barney finished the video on his own, sent it out to a handful of news producers, and pretty soon, the phone was ringing off the hook with a flood of job offers.

9 Worst: Deceiving Women With “Plays”

Instead of just talking to women and seeing if they hit it off like a normal person, Barney likes to deceive women into sleeping with them using “plays.” He’s compiled all these “plays” into a creepy leather-bound document called “The Playbook.”

Each one of Barney’s “plays” is seedier and more shocking than the last, all involving shameless lies. Barney’s Playbook makes Neil Strauss look like a feminist.

8 Best: Getting Marshall A Job At GNB

When Marshall was unemployed and he was struggling to get work as an environmental lawyer, Barney got him a job in the legal department of his company, Goliath National Bank.

It might have been soul-crushing work for a greedy corporation – the opposite of what the environmentally-minded Marshall wanted to do with his life – but it got Marshall’s career back on track and allowed him more financial security with Lily.

7 Worst: Stealing Marshall’s Date Three Times

After Lily left Marshall to attend art school in San Francisco, it took him a while to get back on the horse. Since he met Lily at the start of college, he’d never really dated.

When he felt confident returning to the dating scene and landed a date, Barney stole the girl right from under his nose. And then he did the same thing an additional two times.

6 Best: Giving Lily A Place To Stay

When Lily returned to New York, she was living out of a crummy apartment above a Chinese restaurant that was later absorbed by the restaurant without her knowledge.

This left Lily displaced without a home, and Barney invited her into his apartment until she could get back on her feet, which was a really nice thing to do.

5 Worst: Cheating On Nora

Barney finally found the perfect partner in Nora. She made him want to be a better person and she was kind enough to give him the benefit of the doubt in the face of his many flaws.

Unfortunately, Barney couldn’t control himself and went and torpedoed his happiness by cheating on Nora with Robin in a misguided one-time affair.

4 Best: Coming Clean To Nora

To Barney’s credit, after doing the wrong thing, he did the right thing. Cheating on Nora filled him with guilt and he came clean to her, telling her that he slept with somebody else and still has feelings for this person.

The affair was a terrible thing to begin with, but the best thing to do in that situation is to just bite the bullet and tell the truth before anyone gets hurt any further, and that’s what Barney did.

3 Worst: Filming Women Without Their Permission

Barney has hidden cameras all over his apartment so that he can film his sexual exploits, while the women are none the wiser. In some cases, he reveals the cameras when they’re done and offers to give them a scrapbook of their sexual encounter, but in most cases, he keeps it a secret.

This violates “Stephanie’s Law,” which made it illegal to record or broadcast people undressing or in sexual situations without their consent.

2 Best: Officiating Marshall And Lily’s Wedding

Marshall and Lily had a crisis on their wedding day – actually, they had a number of crises, each more disastrous than the last – but Barney stepped in to save the day at the last second.

Having recently been licensed to wed people, Barney officiates the wedding in an intimate ceremony outside, with just Ted, Robin, and a guitarist present.

1 Worst: Selling A Woman

We don’t actually see this happen, but Barney told the story. He was in the middle of a transaction with some businessmen who didn’t speak English and he gave them a woman in exchange for keys to a new car.

Of all the bad things Barney did, human trafficking has to be the absolute worst. He never treated women like human beings, but in this case, he literally treated a woman like property.
