Barney and Marshall were never as close as Barney and Ted on How I Met Your Mother, but they had some really great moments through the years.

Though Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother was pretty desperate to be known as Ted and Marshall’s best friend, he was always the secondary best friend to both because Ted and Marshall were old college buddies. However, Barney soon becomes a crucial part of their social group and grows especially close to Ted, Marshall and Robin.

Marshall and Barney develop a really great camaraderie especially since they have often worked closely with each together and Barney has even helped Marshall out with his professional anxieties. Here’s a roundup of some of the most wholesome moments from their friendship

10 The Pants Story

Only Barney can make such a meal out of a moderately embarrassing story and keep everyone hooked to it for hours. The Pants Story is one of those tales which in hindsight are maybe just a tad humiliating but Barney made it so much worse. Basically, Marshall forgot to take his pants to work because he was playing basketball with his colleagues and his spare pants weren’t usable.

He called Lily to bring him a fresh pair of pants, but Lily who’s in a hurry hands them over to Barney who works at Marshall’s office too. Barney gives Marshall the pants but not before he has altered them to look like tattered shorts which Marshall had to wear with his suit.

9 When Barney Tells Marshall About Robin

Marshall was the first person Barney confessed to, about having slept with Robin. Technically he engages his services as a lawyer so he wouldn’t tell anyone under attorney-client privilege but he also trusted him enough as a friend.

Barney was basically wracked with guilt about having slept with his Ted’s ex as it goes against the bro-code he holds so sacred. So he brings Marshall into confidence, and in fact, this is something that strengthened their friendship because Marshall knew how important the bro-code was to Barney.

8 The Slapsgiving

A lot of fans have criticized the Slapsgiving plot as cruel and unnecessarily violent. Be that as it may the Slapsgiving episode in the third season is still one of the best episodes of the show, and that’s all because of Marshall and Barney’s dynamic.

Marshall taunts Barney with the threat of an oncoming slap and even sets a countdown to make it harder for Barney to put it in the back of his mind. When Lily the Slap Bet Commissioner puts an end to the bet, the tables are turned on Marshall as Barney mocks him instead.

7 The Ducky Tie Bargain

Easily one of the weirdest moments in Barney and Marshall’s friendship came with the appearance of a certain tie featuring ducks. Marshall gets a bright yellow ducky tie that Barney hates and makes fun of. The group go to dinner at a teppanyaki restaurant, where Barney claims that he can cook better than the chef and in fact, knows every teppanyaki technique.

Marshall scoffs at this and makes a bet with Barney that if he, in fact, does succeed to demonstrate every technique perfectly, Barney could have the permission to touch Lily’s pregnancy breasts (which was of course, problematic). But if he fails, he must wear Marshall’s ducky tie for a year.

6 The Wingman Trick

When Barney and Marshall first meet Barney is shocked to hear that Marshall has only ever slept with one woman, his girlfriend Lily. Barney offered to be his wingman but Marshall refused because he was committed, and at that point Barney asks Marshall if his girlfriend is as hot as the redhead who just walked in, unaware that the redhead is actually Lily.

Marshall and Ted decide to play a trick on him. Marshall pretends that he wants to pursue the redhead. As Marshall leaves to catchup to Lily, Barney tells Ted that Marshall would crash and burn but is shocked out of his mind when he sees Marshall and Lily making out. Barney then calls Marshall ‘a god among men,’ and even starts following him around.

5 When Barney Marries Marshall and Lily

Marshall and Lily’s wedding was one of the sweetest moments on the show. Their wedding day was off to a really bad start because Lily had lost her underwear, Marshall had accidentally shaved off a patch of his hair, the harp player goes into labour and the flowers don’t arrive.

Wary of all the disasters, Marshall and Lily decide to have an intimate ceremony in the park like they always wanted, just in the presence of their friends and then go indoors to deal with whatever wedding disasters awaited them. So, Barney who recently got his licence to marry others performs the ceremony in the park just in the presence of Robin and Ted.

4 When Barney Helps Marshall Get A Job

Marshall always wanted to become an environmental lawyer and Lily was also pretty resolved about him having a do-gooder job and actually making a difference in the world. But something like that obviously doesn’t pay well so when Marshall was unemployed desperate for a job Barney helped him get a job at Goliath National Bank, which Barney’s company had just acquired.

Though Lily was not in favor of Marshall having a corporate job, Barney was obviously more realistic and helped Marshall land a well-paying job at GNB.

3 When Barney Tricks Marshall Into Landing His First Job

In season 1, Barney and Marshall weren’t ride-or-die friends yet, but Barney was still quite selfless about their relationship. Fans have observed that since Barney did not have real friends he worked pretty hard in preserving the friendships he did find.

He knew Marshall was about to take an internship at the Natural Resources Development Corporation because he was quite committed to the idea of saving the world. But Barney tricks him into buying a $4,000 wedding suit which he clearly can’t afford and that makes Marshall say yes to a job at AltruCell where Barney worked back then.

2 When Barney Takes Marshall To Atlantic City

As the birth of his child was approaching, Marshall was totally freaking out, not knowing how things will pan out. He was stressed and clearly not in the right headspace; he even prepares himself for parenting situations using a watermelon as a practice baby and Lily is not happy with this as it is only applicable for a two-day parental workshop.

Barney is then advised by Lily to kidnap Marshall and take him to Atlantic City just so Marshall can unwind and relax, and Barney even switched get-ups with Lily. Barney even tells Marshall that he will wear the infamous ducky tie once again if he would switch off his phone for an hour and helps Marshall take his mind off things.

1 When Marshall Really Cared About Barney’s Happiness

When Barney starts dating Robin Marshall observes that he has put on ‘relationship gut,’ which is the weight one puts on when they’re in a happy and stable relationship. Marshall asks Barney if he is truly happy with Robin but Barney doesn’t seem to be able to give him the answer he is looking for.

This convinces Marshall that Barney is unhappy and he actually enlists the help of Lily and Ted to help him break the two of them up so things could go back to normal.
