How Instagram Live Works & How To Start A Broadcast

Instagram’s take on live video, intuitively called Instagram Live, allows users to broadcast to their followers. The recent launch of Live Rooms also means it’s now possible to broadcast live together with multiple other users. Once a Live broadcast is finished, users can share it to IGTV if they want, where other people — not just their followers — can find and view a replay of it.

That wasn’t always the case though. When Instagram Live first launched in 2016, videos were gone once the broadcast ended, with no way for them to be rewatched let alone reshared. That gave them somewhat of an exclusive feel for the followers of celebrities, influencers, or creators who could watch something that no-one other than those viewing at the time would see. However, as with all platforms, Instagram has evolved its features over time and its Instagram Live feature has gained more bells and whistles.

To start an Instagram Live broadcast, users can either tap the + icon on the Instagram home screen and scroll along to the Live option at the bottom or simply swipe right from the home screen to then do the same. The large white button at the bottom of the Live screen can be tapped to begin broadcasting, but users also have a number of options that they can play around with first, like adding a title for the broadcast, adding a charity link for viewers to donate to, adding different types of media to jazz up the video, and tinkering around with the camera settings. It’s also possible for a user to add and pin comments to their broadcasts.

Instagram Live: During & After Broadcasts

Once live, there are a variety of options for managing a broadcast. To invite guests to join a broadcast, users can tap what looks like a video camera with a + icon inside it and either tap on the name of a viewer or search for another person. At the time of writing, this functionality is still rolling out so it isn’t live for everyone just yet. Users can ask to join someone else’s live broadcast they are watching by tapping the menu icon next to the broadcaster’s username and then ‘Request to join.’ it’s also possible to turn commenting on and off while live and turn ‘requests to join’ off too. Users on iOS devices can add photos or videos from their camera rolls into their broadcasts.

When a Live broadcast is ended, users are given the option to immediately share it to IGTV if they want. Alternatively, they can do so later from their Live Archive — a feature originally unavailable on Instagram Live that allows users to look back at all their previous broadcasts. Live replays are shared to IGTV without any of the likes or comments from the original broadcast, viewer numbers are reset, and it’s not possible to trim or edit them first when sharing them to IGTV in this way. Videos can also be downloaded or deleted from the Live Archive.
