How James Cameron Changed Between Titanic & Avatar 2

Avatar 2 star and Academy Award winner Kate Winslet says James Cameron has become much calmer since their work together on Titanic more than 20 years ago. Winslet recently starred in Francis Lee’s Ammonite with Saoirse Ronan, which released earlier this week, and Avatar 2 is her next highly-anticipated project. The sequel, one of four, has finished filming and is set to release in late 2022.

Winslet and Cameron previously worked together in 1997 on Titanic, a time when Winslet was still only a budding star. In the years following the film, Cameron turned his attention to making Avatar (2009). The movie was considered a breakthrough in the realm of CGI and follows former Marine Jake Sully on a mission to the moon Pandora to gain access to the resource-rich planet, a mission that becomes complicated when he meets Neytiri, a native of Pandora. Avatar 2 takes off from these events, where Sully and Neytiri now have a family on Pandora and face an old threat. In the sequel, Winslet plays Ronal, a member of the sea-dwelling Metkayina clan. Avatar 2 marks Winslet’s first time working with performance or motion capture, a specialty for Cameron now after his groundbreaking work on the first film.

In a recent interview with Collider, Winslet talks about what has been different working with Cameron now on Avatar 2 since they last collaborated more than 20 years ago on Titanic. She remarks on the experience they have both gained since reuniting on the project, most noticeable in his calmer demeanor on set. Winslet recounts:

“Well, look, we’re all older. We all got older. I look back on the experience of making Titanic and it’s no secret that it was a very difficult shoot. It was very, very stressful and things were tough for all involved…And the Jim Cameron on Avatar, he is calmer. I will say that he’s just much more stepped into his true self, I think. That’s because of experience. That’s also because he’s done Avatar before, so he knows this world and he knows these characters. He’s invented that way of filming. There’s a level of confidence that has grounded him in a much more comfortable place, just for him.”

She recalls Cameron’s work on Titanic required six-day weeks for him for seven and a half months of the shoot, with four and a half of those months taking place at night, so filming was often stressful and tiring for cast and crew alike (but nonetheless resulted in the film winning 11 of the 14 Academy Awards for which it was nominated). Conversely, on the Avatar 2 set, Winslet says Cameron’s experience since Titanic has made him visibly calmer, and this has created a very open space for the actors, as Cameron “was brilliantly collaborative on Avatar [2], honestly. I was awestruck by how much time he allows for the actors to often just meander over a scene, if it doesn’t feel like it fit quite right.”

Coincidentally, both Titanic and Avatar 2 involve filming in or around water. For her role as a member of a sea-based clan, Winslet learned how to hold her breath for up to seven minutes. Many scenes she filmed at the bottom of a tank, but she says she always felt safe in Cameron’s hands. Just as she found Cameron on set to be calmer, she explains about her underwater filming, “I found the whole thing incredibly calming.” The director creates the atmosphere for his cast and crew, after all, and it appears that Winslet found the whole experience positive. Winslet says she is very excited for the movie to release, and fans can expect to see her and other Pandora veterans in Avatar 2 in theaters on December 16, 2022.
