How Javicia Leslies Batwoman Is Different To Ruby Roses

Javicia Leslie’s take on Batwoman is very different from that of Ruby Rose’s. Despite wearing the suit and claiming its famous mantle, Ryan Wilder and Kate Kane are opposites in background, upbringing, and in their outlook on life. These differences make them stand out individually as superheroes, with Ryan and Kate each bringing something unique and memorable to Batwoman despite everything.

Rose was first introduced as Kate Kane in “Elseworlds,” 2018’s Arrowverse crossover event, before she went on to headline Batwoman. In the pilot, it was revealed that Kate had been traveling the world to train and pick up new skills in advance of joining her father Jacob’s Crows Security firm. By that point, she was already far-removed from Gotham City and its myriad of issues while Ryan was fully involved and affected by them. Kate grew up in a generally supportive and very wealthy family.

While tragedy struck the Kane household after a car accident killed Kate’s mother and left her twin sister Beth at the mercy of the abusive August Cartwright, Kate went on to become a confident woman who wasn’t afraid to be herself. Her veracity led her to quit the military academy after her superiors found out she was a lesbian. Kate ultimately became Batwoman to stop her sister, now the villain Alice, as well as to honor Bruce Wayne’s legacy and protect the city he had left behind. The skills she learned in the military academy and while training overseas gave her an edge over her opponents. Kate was often a by-the-book hero who was more willing to see ethical dilemmas in black and white.

By comparison, Leslie’s Ryan Wilder grew up with far lesser means. She wasn’t (and still isn’t) rich and had been orphaned very young, which led to her growing up in the foster care system and getting into situations that unfairly put her on the police’s radar. To say that Ryan’s been put through the wringer would be a massive understatement. Alice’s Wonderland gang was responsible for killing her adoptive mother, Ryan served 18 months in jail for a crime she didn’t commit, and she was homeless and struggling to find employment when she found Kate’s Batwoman suit following a plane crash.

Ryan took on the role of Batwoman to feel a sense of power that she never had growing up as a Black woman in a corrupt system. Her run-ins with the police and the criminal justice system color her perspective regarding who they are really there to help. Ryan wants to help the helpless because she personally knows what that feels like, whereas Kate’s wanting to help also comes from a sense of privilege that is not afforded to Ryan. These differences shed light on the kinds of heroes they are and, while they ultimately stand for the same thing, their backgrounds offer them a different approach with regards to how they tackle these injustices.

Of course, there are plenty of other differences between the two. Kate and Ryan’s fighting styles are incredibly dissimilar. Kate’s combat skills are far more militaristic while Ryan is trained in martial arts. This is noticeable in the ways they both handle attackers while on patrol. Kate is also a lot more serious than Ryan, who can be lighthearted and knows how to have a bit of a good time while wearing the Batwoman suit. This is evident when she finds out about all the cool gadgets within the suit and is overjoyed that she gets to use them. Ultimately, Kate and Ryan are very different people whose unique skill sets, personalities, and stories affect their role as Batwoman while upholding the same core values.
