How Kevin Feige Fixed Hawkeyes Best Action Sequence

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made a suggestion that ended up making the car chase scene in Hawkeye way better. Hawkeye is the latest of the Marvel/Disney+ shows. The festive-themed series follows Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, struggling to cope with Natasha/Black Widow’s death and having the age-old Christmas movie problem of just trying to get home for Christmas. Clint’s plans are thrown into chaos when Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), an archer who has gotten her inspiration from Hawkeye, gets her hands on the Ronin suit and makes the world question if Clint’s other alter ego is back.

A reluctant Clint ends up working alongside Kate as go head-to-head with the Tracksuit Mafia, and later Echo/Maya Lopez, who is seeking revenge on Ronin after witnessing her father’s death at his hands. During Hawkeye episode 3, after Clint and Kate manage to escape the Tracksuit Mafia, the pair hot wire a car and end up in a thrilling car chase which sees Kate utilize some of Clint’s impressive trick arrows. Among the arrows include a plunger arrow, an explosive arrow, and even a Pym arrow, which sets up a lot of questions about Hank Pym’s involvement in the superhero’s weaponry following Avengers: Endgame.

The exciting car chase in Hawkeye episode 3 however, wouldn’t have been the same without Feige. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, directors Amber Templemore-Finlayson and Katie Ellwood, otherwise known as Bert and Bertie, revealed that the original plan for the car chase had been to shoot it at night. The pair detailed how Feige had said there was “too much at night,” and that changing the chase to be set in the daytime had encouraged the directors to do “even more practically.” You can read their full quote below:

Ellwood: “It was only after we’d started shooting the show that Kevin was like, ‘there’s too much at night. We need to put some sequences in the day, but we’d planned it all at night! And of course we had been like hey, you can hide things in the shadows. But then suddenly it was daylight. So we just reconvened with our amazing team and decided to embrace it. We’d already decided to do as much practically as possible, but it drove us to do even more practically. The result was amazing.”

Templemore-Finlayson: “It has a grit and it has a danger from being in the daytime when you can see more.”

Feige’s comment about the amount of nighttime scenes certainly wasn’t unwarranted. Up until the car chase, many of Hawkeye’s major action scenes, including Kate’s first outing in the Ronin suit and the pair’s confrontation with the Tracksuit Mafia outside of Kate’s apartment, had all taken place at night. As well as giving Hawkeye a refreshing measure of daylight, it also ensured the scene was closer to the car chase in the popular original comic book story by Matt Fraction and David Aja, from which the show has taken a lot of inspiration.

Hawkeye has received a lot of praise for its grounded, impressive action, so it makes sense that Feige would have wanted some of the most gripping action scenes in better lighting. Whilst certain scenes such as Kate in the Ronin suit are enhanced by keeping things hidden in the shadows, the car chase was made better by allowing fans to see all the excitement clearly. With the show heading towards its conclusion, fans can only wait to see how Hawkeye handles its remaining confrontations with Echo, the Tracksuit Mafia, and any other MCU characters who may or may not show up.
